Prior to the inevitable headon crash, do you want to be the ball or the bat?

I saw some people going 55 over the holiday...of course, they were in 60 zones, in the left lane, beside a car going 54.9....but I digress.

Considering all the snow that fell in your area on Christmas day driving less than the posted 60 was not only the right thing to do, but considerate.

Check out one of those emergency driving techniques courses some time. They are offered in most areas, often at raceways. And nowhere in the curriculum does the following appear: "speed up to more than 100 or whatever speed it takes

Well there's at least 1 motorcycle safety course (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) with at least 1 scenario where accelerating is suggested as a way to avoid an accident - http://www.msf-usa.org/MotorcycleChallenge/scened.html

I haven't been through all the questions and simulations, so there may be more. I'm thinking of getting a motorcycle instead of a sports-car, to save some fuel and have fun. You can get a BMW with 162hp for around $13K after rebates! That'll provide some acceleration!

After having a good motorcycle you question the very words sports car. Sporty like car maybe but with the power to weight ratio of a big bike there simply is no comparison. But I will warn you it doesn't matter how brightly colored your bike or your riding suit is you will become invisible to many 4 wheel drivers.

One cool thing about a street bike in California is you can split lanes. You might have to slow down for a traffic jam but you will not have to play the stop and go thing.

Who drove on Christmas day? Don't let facts get in the way of a good story. As if I'd drive with all the drunks and lunatics on Christmas day. However, not a patch of ice and even very little dampness on the 24th and 26th. Makes passing on the left a cinch

Learning how to drive with situational awareness is even more considerate...

Staying home on National Eggnog Day is using your Noggin considerately.

Many also sober up after New Year's Eve too.

Happy New Year!

Likewise, may the new year find you many nice empty roads where you can go 55 free from hassles

55 MPH speed limits are such a bad idea that legalizing Lorena Bobbit like attacks would be a better move than going back to 55. I'd rather have a 100 MPH speed limit.

euphonium: Your comment was repeated after WWI as then it was thought the machine gun was too horrible of a weapon, but look what happend a few decades later. I would like to believe your crystal ball image, but my military background says to be more realistic.

The machine gun was horrible for the troops fighting the war.

Nuclear weapons would be horrible for everyone - troops and civilians (not to mention water supplies and the soil). Considerable difference.

euphonium: Final Word: When fuel is needed to fight a war, it will be rationed. When it is rationed, the speed limit will be 55 or less. The Military has prior claim and the Military will be honored.

During World War II there was never a shortage of gasoline. In some cities, unused gasoline was dumped into rivers (this being the era prior to the formation of the EPA).

Gasoline was rationed to prevent driving in order to conserve rubber. The U.S. was worried about being cut off from South American rubber plantations. Tires were virtually impossible to buy during World War II. There was a shortage of rubber.

Given that this scenario isn't anywhere close to happening with gasoline, and that tires last MUCH longer today, any enthusiasm for the return of the dubious 55 mph speed limit is wildly premature, especially given its ineffectiveness in other areas.
