No, I mean that with the exception of parts of the Autobahn, most of the EU posted limits are similar to ours.

Indeed I would not doubt that for speed limits can actually be posted due to highway engineering standards and more importantly reality.

edit - you still have power Kernick? Sounds like quite the ice storm up there

No, I lost power, but somehow my computer's still working. I think it's because we're saving our carbon credits, and the spirits of Earf looked kindly on our valley.

Kernick, move just a bit farther north to Quebec and you'll be both smart and legal.

They should also include a ban on white cars in winter, in that legislation! Much higher accident rate with white cars in the winter. I'd be okay there too - I have a red car.

Probably one of the more important metrics lacking in the projected 30,000 fatality count which remarkably is down from a more "normal" 43,000 fatality count is the all important "per capita measurement". However at first look -13,000 fatalities is a wonderful reversal. (normal PC boiler plate observed)

Sorry, but it is not a 13K reversal. The 30,000 fatalities are for the first 9 months of '08 with some incomplete data for October. So the 12 month picture is still in the 40K range.

The article states there is a 9.8% drop thru the same period, compared to 2007.

Actually the NHTSA brought it up saying that they expect there to be about a 10% (that would be somewhere around 4,000) drop in highway fatalities.

While in a way it doesn't sound like much, I'm reminded of the Joseph Stalin quote "One death is a tragedy; a million is a statistic". It is very easy to look at the statistics and not appreciate that for every one of those statistics (40,000+ fatalities), there is a massive tragedy for someone. So every death that can be prevented, should be. Lest you be the one delivering or have delivered to you the sad news that someone you care for is never coming home.

Ya gotta love ole comrade Joe S ! He was the one to cause to execute, what 25M of his fellow countrymen and worked real hard to keep it "non statistical".

That is not our society's ACTUAL stance at all. Why surely we don't want extra people to die, if we wanted to prevent every accident and death possible, there are many more things we could do. For example, I can list:

First and foremost - stop discretionary driving.
Only allow auto makers to make the better performing cars - i.e. best braking distances, best handling.
Use racing safety, the same systems that keep NASCAR drivers from death in their high speed wrecks.

So no we don't as a society try to prevent every death possible. We allow teens to hop in a car with their friends, not wearing crash helmets, enjoying the entertainment of their car and cellphones, in vehicles that don't have the best brakes and tires, and drive 150 miles in a day, to simply lay on a beach.

Injuries and deaths increase because we have granted people the freedom to do this. Driving is an increased risk that we take voluntarily. What we are and aren't willing to accept in the name of safety is also something we do voluntarily.
