Sleeping Beauties -- Top 10 Great Barn Finds - Tantalizing tales of barn finds have been circulating for as long as people have been collecting old cars. Enthusiasts still talk about Barney Pollard, a mysterious 1950s-era Chicago collector who amassed hundreds of old crocks from the teens and '20s. He removed front bumpers, drained fluids and then stored them vertically so he could cram still more cars in his warehouses. When he died, his collection was sold and the cars dispersed. (more)

When I was a kid working in a gas station, this old guy had one of these and every 2000 miles he would have us change the oil and filter. Oh, what a nasty b***h that oil filter was! It was in a canister and wedged between the frame and the exhaust manifold which, of course was HOT. It had a long bolt that went through the middle and about four O rings and gaskets that had to he aligned perfectly or it would leak like hell! It would take three or four tries to finally get it right along with an hour of frustration and obcenites galore!

In the mid 1980s I came apun a 1951 packard convertable in an old body shop which had been left for work and the owner never returned after 17 years. The shop owner had the title and would let me have the car for 1,200.00. I put 500,00 down to think about it . Later I returned and took my 500.00 back . a couple of weeks ago, i worked helping on a project our town does to help out the elderly and other needy. i worked at the home of a lady who was 96 years old. in the garage was a '75 or so corvette. it was brown(yuck), but looked in good shape. she said it hadn't moved in 25 years. overall nothing special. some of these other posts reminded me, that when i was in high school, or maybe even early college, a different town, riding my bike over to one of my friends, passed an average house on an average street. i had passed it a million times before. one day the barn style garage doors were open. inside was a silver mercedes gullwing! it was quite a shock to see as i would have expected a plymouth or something like that! Replying to: arnoudodw (Aug 26, 2008 2:38 am) The Dovaz collection...that must have been the one featured in "Automobile Quarterly" in the 80s, I remember reading that when I was a boy, as my school library actually received occasional issues (donated maybe) of that hardbound magazine. Replying to: fintail (Aug 26, 2008 8:24 am) Yes, that is the Dovaz collection. It has been several times in Automobile Quarterly and there was a book in the 90's where this collection was published. Sleeping Beauties, Schlafende Schonheiten or Slapende schoonheden were the title of the book, published bij Ellert und Richter, written by Herbert W Hesselmann and Halwart Schrader. This year there will be a new book about this collection, more information about that is written on the site.
