I had the same noise coming from mine almost like an animal had crawled up in the engine. Then mine started to shift funny and we took it in and the transmission was gone! $2,400.00 later........ 2006 Mountaineer with 90,000 miles

Those transmissions were made to go 100,000 miles. Yours died just short of schedule. It's the cost of driving.My neighbor has an 09 Suburban - just lost their transmission at 60,000 miles.
OTOH, I have an 02 Odyssey with 194,000 on the transmission, still going. My cousin has a Taurus with 300,000 miles on it, original transmission (and engine). Lots of factors go into these events - but 100,000 miles from anybody's transmission shouldn't be denigrated as unfair performance.
