#1 of 18 2001 Mountaineer Transmission Overheat

My 2001 Mountaineer's 4R70W transmission overheats. I replaced the filter and drained the fluid from the torque converter drain plug. I filled the transmission with 12 quarts of Mercon V. The capacity is 13.9 quarts. I'm sure there was at least 2 quarts that I couldn't drain. I ran compressed air through all the cooling lines and oil coolers. They are free of blockage. However, I ran the engine with both pressure and return lines fom the transmission and no fluid came out of the transmission. I don't think it has a bad pump since the torque converter refilled and the transmission shifts fine and does not slip.
Is there a bypass valve, check valve, or a sensor that prevents the fluid from flowing? Any suggestion?

I am not sure what it is. It almost feels like the transmission is skipping, but my brother seems to think that it is something with the AWD trying to grab. It only has 55K miles on it and we all ready had to replace the front driver side wheel bearing. The skipping does not do it all the time and when I take it to the dealer, they say that there is nothing wrong with it and they drove it and feel anything. Any suggestions?

I have a 2004 Mountaineer with about 55,000 miles on it and we have experienced the same problem of skipping and transmission problems when in reverse from the time we bought it. The dealership always said they could find nothing wrong with it. Now it is whirring and just stops dead. If you wait a few minutes it will start again. Our warranty is up, do we have any recourse with the dealer or Ford. If not, is it worth a new transmission? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Our 2004 had trouble after quick stops- the engine would race and then finally shift into gear. It also started to leak. The guy at the transmission shop said that these are notoriously bad tranny's and they're only good for about 70K (ours had 63K). After that they need a complete overhaul. When he took ours apart, it had shavings in the pan, the belts were worn, and there was other significant wear. Ford denies any problems.

My wife has been telling me that every once in a while she will put our '04 Mountaineer AWD V8 in reverse to back out of our garage it will make a loud noise like you have just backed into something. I could never get the same thing until this afternoon. I went to back out and went about 4 feet and it made like a boom sound or it felt like the transmission locked up and it came to a sudden stop. It was as if I had shifted the transmission into park while I was moving without stopping first. I applied the brake and shifted it into drive and drove forward a couple of feet and back into reverse and it was fine. Is this a problem with the transmission, rear end, or possibly the parking brake after it sat in the garage engaged for two days?

I have a 2006 mountaineer premier edition AWD with a 6 speed trans and 31k miles. I have had it for 18 months and in the winter I heard a whining sound in the trans between 10 to 20 mph and shifts hard into gear. At higher speeds the noise disappears and runs fine. It appears usually on cold days and does not subside when the car warms up. I had it at a trans shop and he found nothing wrong, but did hear the noise. He changed the fluid and filter. Until 1 month ago the noise had stopped, then I noticed it again on a rainy day, it lasted until the ignition was turned off and has not reappeared. Finally last week as we were driving down a grade at about 55mph the trans felt like it was pulsating down hill. Almost trying to shift gears but didn't. Once I accelearated it went away. I was told at the trans shop when the work was done it could be the solenoid valve. He had checked bulletins with Mercury and other shops and found nothing Have you heard of anything like this before.

Help please! I have a 1998 Mercury Mountaineer AWD 5.0 V8. When driving it sounds as though someone is beating the bottom of the truck with a hammer. Any ideas???

I got 2003 MMount, 4.0, 6 cyl, regular trans; and -very often- the overdrive turns off and the button not respond when trying turn it on...this happens driving over 65 mph; and besides the OD off, TRANS overheated msgs appears too. Turning the car off/on resets the msg and sometimes don't show up for the rest of the trip and runs ok.
In the workshop#1 (general) I was told the scan shows code 775; solenoids out of range. I drove it to another -trans specialist- workshop (70 miles) to ensure diagnostic; the vehicle behaves normal, -nothing wrong- and the new scan showed nothing!
Took it to the electric shop to ensure right voltage, and voltage was correct but cca or caa not, so need to replace battery; by the way I left my car with workshop#2 several days for them to test/drive it and look for something mas precise...Do someone have or had any similar experience? Please?? if so, what was the conclusion?
