Like all insurance, it's always cheaper in the long run to insure yourself if you can afford it. I never buy extended warranties and only buy insurance on the house and vehicles - things that cost more than a few thousand to replace. You'd be trading a guaranteed smaller payment now to avoid a potential large payment later.
