I am considering buying a SUV that could help me to drive off-road 1/3 of the year and the other 2/3 in the town/city.

The rear suspension of the xterra is multi-leaf with solid axle not independent multi-link suspension as the majority of SUV in the market included the Sorento, FJ Cruiser, Kia Borrego etc. Could someone elaborate on this. Why Nissan decided to use a cheap rear suspension in its xterra. Has someone some experience about the 2008 xterra ride?

From a 4WD off road point of view, leaf-under suspensions (such as the one found on the Xterra) provide the best performance. The amount of wheel travel i get with my '04 Xterra by simply adding new shackles and sway bar disconnects is very sufficient for all types of off roading. I use mine for rock crawling and don't have any complaints about the rear suspension performance.
