Comparison Test: 2007-2008 Sport Sedans - This is exactly why we gathered this group of sport sedans. That is, to find out if the 2008 Cadillac CTS, 2007 Infiniti G35 Sport, 2008 Lexus IS 350 or 2008 Mercedes-Benz C350 Sport can topple the Bavarian champ — the 2007 BMW 335i. In the spirit of the segment, each car in the test is outfitted with sport package hardware — usually a stiffer suspension and bigger wheels and tires — and an automatic transmission. (more)

Edmunds places more weight on features than I do. I place more value on performance and the BMW feel of the road. Getting back to a previous thought, one could weight the rankings any which way to have different cars come out on top.

The Infiniti had a Mechanical limited-slip differential and standard Paddle shifters. I know I wouldn't expect to find these items in a sports sedan with an automatic tranny!? Can't pick and choose to make your value theory valid. That's Edmund's job.

Replying to: kdshapiro (Nov 14, 2007 6:39 pm) Once again, kdshapiro, the BMW is just a European taxi wearing Groucho Marx noseglasses. It would not win against the Infiniti, and only beats the Cadillac CTS because most the folks at Edmunds have an unreasonable addiction to flat-out acceleration and have a general aversion to sophistication, elegance and technological innovation. THe BMW is just a taxi, like I said. In America, it's the Ford Crown Victoria. In Japan, it's the Toyota Corolla. In England it's a Citroen. In Europe, it's the BMW 3-Series. And as a taxi, the car has good road feel. Good rust protection. Nimble in the parking lots and tight squeezes. But horrible in terms of refinement (3-Series has none at all except a marginally refined VANOS 6-cylinder), quality, reliability, sophistication, quietness and even feature content. The BMW 3-Series rarely comes with high-feature content because the Europeans don't believe in putting lots of options in a car that's just going to be used for transporting people to and from the airport. This also explains why BMW doesn't use leather in their interiors--they know the prospective 3-Series buyer is not discriminating ("Heck. The interior looks like leather, so it's gotta be just as good as leather..."), so BMW uses vinyl seating surfaces in the 3-Series. Yeehaw-inducing acceleration, naugahyde-wrapped seating surfaces and a chassis that's purpose-built for global taxi duty (except the US). Welcome to the BMW 3-Series, gentlemen.

Replying to: pmc4 (Nov 14, 2007 9:31 pm) Good grief, Steven Hawking, there really is an alternate universe! Where the Mattel Toy inspired, chrome-crazed styling of the CTS is considered "elegant". And where the toys and do-dads that GM relies upon to try to camouflage their miserable driving dynamics are considered "technical innovations". And where the original muscle car NASCAR loving "Yeehaws" suddenly woke up thinking they are "sophisticated". I'm not sure what space ship you took to get here, but maybe you could commandeer the Mother Ship and relocate GM to your planet? Because they sure don't seem to be doing very well on this one. I guess all of that 40 year old push rod sophistication isn't fooling as many Earthlings as GM had hoped. P.S. Put me in a BMW taxi. Please. I have to suffer the indignation of having GM/Cadillacs thrust upon me by Hertz. I have finally succeeded in getting my "Gold Membership" status elevated to give me first dibs on Toyota Camrys, which will at least save me a little dignity.

Replying to: habitat1 (Nov 15, 2007 5:20 am) Oh, well, considering the competition from the CTS and G, I'll just have to lease my next BMW taxi for 3 more years because that's all I can afford and I am very naive so the "sophisticated" cars never get into my hands. I'll just never learn! My hearing is going so I am unaware of rattles and groans from the E90. The whole car is loose when I shut the door, akin to a Corvair or Pinto. Not half as solid as a Caddy. In the hairpin turns, the whole car sways wildly and it's way beyond control over 20 MPH! If you see an E90 taxi, don't get in...Death Lives in a BMW! Let's shake & bake in the CTS! BTW, I wonder why there are no CTS taxi's out there anywhere? The leasing companies have these little babies all over the place! Regards, OW |

Replying to: pmc4 (Nov 14, 2007 9:31 pm) Okay. And the G is an ugly RWD version of the ugly Maxima. So now what? "Yeehaw-inducing acceleration, naugahyde-wrapped seating surfaces and a chassis that's purpose-built for global taxi duty (except the US). Welcome to the BMW 3-Series, gentlemen." It's obvious you have never driven a BMW.

Replying to: drtravel (Nov 14, 2007 7:12 pm) Now you are saying I'm bashing Infiniti? I can certainly deduce from the way edmunds ranks it the BMW wins in performance, which is consistent with the rest of the world. If they want to rank feature/$ as high as performance I can't argue with that. But that is not my ranking, and if one looks at sales, a lot of people also think differently.

Replying to: kdshapiro (Nov 15, 2007 6:51 am) Why always criticize only the Infiniti when someone criticizes your BMW? Are you not practicing the same as you are criticizing? It's obvious you have never driven a BMW. It's obvious you never seriously considered any of the other cars. There's BMW and then everybody else - the poor losers! Just because the poster doesn't share your opinion doesn't mean he (or she) hasn't driven the car. Every car has faults and room for improvement. There must be something with your car that had you saying "What were they thinking?". If you ran the BMW design center, what improvements would you suggest for next year's model? You're an expert on the BMW 335 so I know the group would value your honest assessment of your car's weaknesses. Reading a forum to find useful information is a great tool. Unfortunately reading posts by people with allegiances to a particular brand that only praise their car and criticize the others doesn't serve this purpose. Posts that inform the group of the shortcomings of the poster's own car are very useful for readers who are trying to reach a decision about these cars. Comparos are meant to be a starting point for this discussion but ultimately end up being a ra-ra session for the various brands involved. I enjoy and respect posts by those who offer an honest assessment of their own cars. Extreme biases in favor of a brand offer little but justification for your purchase.
