What is this discussion about? Infiniti EX35, SUV

Full Test: 2008 Infiniti EX35 - With the 2008 Infiniti EX35, Infiniti tells us that it's personalizing the sport-utility concept, creating a practical vehicle that has a fine sense of luxury and goes about its business like a personal coupe. But there's no talk of crossovers or station wagons from the guys at Infiniti. (more)

They are correct. It is a SUV that thinks its a sports car. This thing really flies and you can take the off-on ramps like you were driving a sports car. If you don't need to haul a lot of stuff or people and you want a car that you won't see yourself coming and going in, then this is for you. This is my third Infiniti (I still have the second an FX-45) and I am very happy. Should say my wife is very happy since we got rid of her Solara Convertible for the security of a real roof and AWD. After the firts ice/snow storm she was convinced.

The 328i wagon turns into a corner a little better than the EX-35 but I could find little else that excited me about these cars. For me a loaded 2WD EX35 was a better total package. It offers more technical features/gadgets along with being 4K cheaper. The 328ix wagon felt like a slug when equipped with the 6spd auto. I also am not a fan of runflat/crap tires on any car; been there and done that already.

Once you get use to a little body lean on turn in the EX sticks well in the corners. A lot of the initial lean could be dialed out with some thicker sway bars. I personally wouldn't mess with the springs and shocks because I really appreciate how well the car's current suspension smooths out the bumps.

Seems REALLY odd that they clocked an EX35 AWD at 6.5, but an FX35 AWD at 6.1, doesn't it?

The FX35 probably benefits from the 7-speed automatic (better gear ratios) and may have a lower geared rear end. The 6 extra HP doesn't hurt anything either.

I'd be surprised if the differentials were any different (cost savings) and the 6 hp wouldn't amount to a hill o' beans. But you are right on the tranny. I guess that must be the difference.

Can anyone help me make an intelligent decision when it comes to buying the EX35 2WD vs. the AWD? My common man's assumption is that if I want a bit more speed I'd go with the 2WD, but if i want more stability I'd go with the AWD -- is this accurate? As you can tell, I'm not a car expert, but I've been hard pressed to find a more fully loaded car than this EX35, in terms of having luxury, utility (albeit limited), sport, and technology. Thanks for your answers!

I'd say that's right. I think the 2WD has a better turning circle and maybe a marginal improvement in gas mileage (but it's probably neglible). I have the AWD vehicle and it seems to handle solidly in the rain. I live in the Northeast. No snow yet since my car purchase. Had I lived in a more temperate climate, I might've gone with the 2WD. Less stuff to break/fix. It's a complex system. And the vehicle cost is less. But where I live they just don't sell the 2WD. I think the pick up in the 2WD is more spirited but I wouldn't know from first hand experience.

I think you mean traction on slick surfaces. Both drive trains have the same type of stability system. So if you live in an area with months of snow and ice then AWD may be a better choice. If you live where the winters are milder then the 2wd would be fine. Having the proper winter tires is more important than how many wheels are being driven. With a set of Michelin Xi2 snow tires my 2wd handles the snow and ice really well. The traction control and stability system worked well on slick roads.

There, of course, is a target consumer. What is that consumer? I'm not sure yobut I am a 55, semi-retired, ex-soccer mom. My husband and I are somewhat empty-nester's (college kid)so trip's aren't that big a deal with fold down seats. Leg room is cramped, so a third person, which we have had, should either sit behind the shortest front seat passenger or be on the short side. I've been looking into mounting luggage on the roof (got racks but no crossbars?) but haven't made a decision on it yet.

There are a few little things that bug me, like no auto hatch (use it more than the auto-up seats but not DOWN) but nothing I can't live without. LOTS of gizzmo's that I really don't need, but they came with the deal. Just need to figure them all out! I'm averaging approx. 22 mph, more city than highway, so I'm happy with that.

The best thing for me about this car is the ride. I find myself enjoying just being behind of the wheel. I had taken a 2007 BMW 500 series(which ever one)out on a test drive and thought I'd found the car of my dreams. But I gotta say, this little dude rides like a cloud, plenty of comfort, and yes, even the memories of the sporty need is there when I step on the gas. I find myself over-driving the brakes a little, due to going too fast!

I am an ex-soccer mom, and have gone from sedans, coupes, full-sive SUV's and back to a sports coupe, and this car has fulfilled my needs very satisfactorily. I bought it outright, so I'm on OWNER, not a leaser, and I'm looking to pamper and take care of it. But don't be afraid of it...let's see Infiniti put their products to the test. So far, so good.
