Full Test: 2008 Infiniti EX35 - With the 2008 Infiniti EX35, Infiniti tells us that it's personalizing the sport-utility concept, creating a practical vehicle that has a fine sense of luxury and goes about its business like a personal coupe. But there's no talk of crossovers or station wagons from the guys at Infiniti. (more)

So Infiniti thinks that Americans will pony up an additional $10,000 for the dubious privilege of driving a G35 wagon (nee CUV) that is challenged on on interior space but truly a "drivers wagon"? That sounds quite similar in concept to the Lexus IS300 Sportcross or Acura RDX, both of which, if I recall correctly were sales hits. Oh, I guess I recall incorrectly, too bad for Nissan, maybe they can sell these things to Europeans.

But, after 24 hours driving by the “snakiest” roads, guys definitely were a bit out of themselves. Otherwise, how to understand this: “The wheelbase of the G35 platform has been stretched 2.0 inches to 112.2 inches, while the body is 4.7 inches longer at 187.0 inches.” First of all, why they need to stretch wheelbase of G35 to 112.2”, if it already is 112.2”. Point is: they cut off 2” from G35 wheelbase to 110.2”. They cut off 2” not just from G35 wheelbase, but they cut off 2” from EX 35 Concept wheelbase! That’s why back seat is too tight. They cut off 2” from my heart … Second, EX35 body is not 4.7 longer at 187”, but 4.7” damn shorter at 182.3 inches! No wonder at 187” guys can see this small and “handsome” ( MotorTrend.com) vehicle, as “a tall wagon”. Let me ask you guys, where, in a world, you did see a tall wagon with such round roof line? With the same success you can label any CUV like this. For example, Hyundai Veracruz – Tall Wagon, that’s it. And believers will repeat after you: tall wagon - Americans hate them. I’d stick to Car & Driver and Motor Trend reviewers, who name EX35 “G35 hatchback” or 92% - car and 8% - SUV. Further – more: “ The EX 35 rear suspension is derived from the Infiniti FX’s, a measure to accommodate the 16.8 cubic feet of cargo room behind of second-row seat. Good thing, too, because a BMW X3 can still haul twice as much.” Tell me, guys; what is “Good thing” about? Maybe good thing is that BMW X3 has twice as much cargo room? But this is not thru either – it’s clearly can be seen on a comparison video (youtube.come). EX35 was loaded with 2 golf clubs and one big handbag, while X3 took just 2 golf clubs – handbag did not fit behind the backseat. How it can be that smaller overall BMW X3 (179.9”) can haul TWICE as much, than EX35?! |

| The E35 AWD curb weight estimate should be more like 4,029LBs and not 5,029LBs? | |
|
Yes, someone already said this... "...and the fully equipped 5,029-pound all-wheel-drive EX35 AWD is just 241 pounds heavier than an all-wheel-drive G35x." So, the loaded EX35 weighs more than a BMW X5, and the loaded G35X weighs more than an Audi A8L W12? Interesting.

Replying to: esf (Oct 28, 2007 8:12 pm) Thats incorrect its actually 4,029 pounds. So, the loaded EX35 weighs more than a BMW X5, and the loaded G35X weighs more than an Audi A8L W12? Interesting Thats impossible, all HELM cars weigh more than the G35x, the only car that stands a chance is the Jaguar XJ series, because its structure is made up of aluminum.

Replying to: skarie (Oct 29, 2007 11:26 am) Therefore, the 4,000 lbs weight estimate for the EX35 is correct. The 5,000 lbs statement in the article is clearly a misprint. In fact, it is apparent that there are multiple errors throughout the article. For example, the author says that the EX35 wheelbase has been stretched by 2 inches over the G35 platform to 112.2 inches and the length extended by 4.7 inches to 187.0 inches. The problem is that the wheelbase and length of the G35 are 112.2 in. and 187.0 in., respectively. This editor is in serious need of an editor himself. |

Replying to: skarie (Oct 29, 2007 11:26 am) Sorry. I said that completely tongue-in-cheek. Of course I know that the EX35's "5,029lb" curb weight was a typo. And I also know that the XJ is made of aluminum... it weighs less than the S-Type. |

Replying to: charlesb (Oct 27, 2007 2:49 pm) ??? $10k additional to what??? |

...but the child car seats which fit in my FX will probably not fit in the EX. If writer who wrote the review had been correct on the wheelbase, I would have loved a hot sportwagon like this. If Edmunds.com needs a test driver who can write with more accuracy, I'd be willing to career around snaking roads for them.
