Honda Accord 2008 vs Toyota Avalon 2007 by maxspa

How do they compare? Am going to buy a
new Honda Accord 2008 V6 (no navigation) in polished metal or diamond dust OR a new 2007 Toyota Avalon XLS (no nav.) in phantom gray or pearl blizzard. They seem to be in about the same ballpark price-wise. I know they're about the same size and weight but does the Avalon have a softer ride? Does the Accord sit lower? Any other points that I should know about?

The Accord is about 5K cheaper than the Avalon you are looking at. My '06 XLS was 34K with the JBL and VSC/Heated seat package. I think the Accord stickers a little under 29K with everything but NAV. I haven't driven an '08 Accord yet, but usually the Accord has a fairly tight ride. The Avalon has a quiet, soft (but controlled) ride. Think of it in terms of a slightly tighter Buick. The Touring trim stiffens things up a bit, but it is no sports car, unless your talking about straight line performance. The 2GR V6 is fantastic, amazing at higher revs and still great on gas.

Interior room is great, I'm 6' 290 and am very comfortable. With the front seats all the way back six footers still have plenty of room in the back seat. The rear leg room is much greater in the Avalon than the Accord. The rear seat also reclines, but doesn't fold down.

My Avalon has been flawless in 16K miles. I average about 22MPG overall and that is 70% city or sitting in jammed traffic. 30MPG is more than possible on a long trip and many posters here on Edmunds claim 27 overall with a good bit of highway mixed in. Great #'s for a big powerful car.

The biggest problem with the early Avalons was a firmware problem with the transmission causing hesitations for some drivers. My '06 has not been affected and from what I know they have worked it out with the new models which now use the 6 speed.

The MSRP is just under $29,000 on the 08 Accord I like. The dealer said no discounts at this time (I'm in southern California). I can get $5000 off the sticker on the 07 Avalon.
I like the ride and handling of the Avalon. Need to take a second test drive in the Accord... it seemed super quiet but possibly lower to the ground. The new 08 Accord seems to be a more exciting design, but my friends tell me that the Avalon has much more prestige. Though I live in a snobby resort area, the prestige factor is not important to me. I am looking for reliability, comfort, and some style....and priced right.

When I bought (leased actually) mine I only got about 3K off sticker and that was from a dealer I have bought two prior cars from. Other dealers were only offering about 1500. I don't know about having more prestige, however, in my neck of the woods (south Jersey outside Philly) you see maybe one Av for 10 Camry or Accords. It sounds as though the Avalon may be the better deal, but it is a three year old design now, where the Accord is brand new (if that matters to you).

maxspa,
I too am in SoCal and I was comparing an 08 Avalon XLS with an O8 EX-L V6 Accord. Although the Avalon rides smoother than the Accord I chose to go with the Accord because all of the safety features are standard as opposed to being options on the Avalon. I acquired my Accord the second week they were out, and you are correct, the dealers were not offering very good pricing. I ended paying $1100.00 of sticker price, including mark up,($500 below MSRP) so I was happy considering that most of the Honda dealers were marking up by about the $1000.00. The Toyota dealers are much more willing to negotiate and I was actually able to get an excellent price quote on the Avalon. I can't comment on the reliability of the Accord since this is my first Honda, but I am confidant with there track record. I was a loyal Toyota owner having owned a Corolla and Camry in the past. It is too bad the Toyota opted to make safety optional, if it was standard I would have kept buying Toyotas

I also like the styling an the Accord much better. Good luck on your purchase.

I too would have considered buying a Toyota Avalon or a Camry if they had made VSC standard which becomes a mandatory feature in couple of years (as far as I can recall). I ended up with a V-6 Ex Honda Accord which I take delivery today. Looking forward to driving a Honda for the first time!

I could have received a very good deal on a 2007 Avalon, but was very anxious to see the new 2008 Accord, so I held off. You can't go wrong with a Honda or a Toyota, but I really needed the larger back seat that the Avalon provides for my three growing kids. I didn't drive the Accord when I saw how much smaller it was even though it is now designated as a large sedan. I ended up purchasing a 2008 Avalon Touring and couldn't be happier. Drive both and buy the car you like the best.

We had our Honda Accord for 16 years. It still looks and drives great but after so many years, the wife wanted a new car. We held off till the new Accord came out and fully intended to purchase the '08 sedan. I was leary of the new 6 variable cylinder. It didn't really seem to offer much more than 1 mpg better than the previous 6 cyl and the risk seemed too high for such a small increase. Although we love the looks of the new Accord, the EX 4 cyl we tested, drove and felt pretty much like 16 year old Accord except with a little less power.

Then we tested the Avalon. Now as you can expect, we're Honda fans after 16 years reliable service but after driving the Avalon, there just wasn't any comparison. You can feel it as you drive, it's effortless and when you need power it's deceptively fast. We love all the features of the Avalon Limited. It's like driving a luxury car for about the same price as a Honda.

Like I said, we fully intended to buy the new Accord but the Avalon is just so much more car for the money.

How are you finding the 0 V6 Accord VCM operating? Are you feeling any surging, hesitation etc at 45, 65 or 70 MPH?

reel freak...
Thanks for the good info. I am leaning toward the Avalon... too many concerns about the V6 Accord as expressed on these forums. Drove the 190 and thought it was a too noisy particularly when accelerating.
