The V6 in my 2008 Accord has started burning oil as well. The Honda dealer suggested that we change the oil more frequently and ignore the maintenance minder. First car I've had in 25 years that burns oil. The mechanic that changed the oil said that off-the-record, the VCM engines are starting to have problems with burning oil.

I have almost 21,000 miles on my 08 V6 and except for adding a quart before the first oil change, my oil consumption is now the same as my previous 06 V6. My 06 would be down about 1/2 quart when due for oil change. With the 08, I noted when the oil got to the add mark at the 5,000 mile mark, I noticed the VCM wouldn't kick in like it used to. Once I added a quart, it went back to it's normal operation. So it appears the VCM operates by electronics and oil pressure, but not 100% sure.

My dealer recommends the same - they aways have. I've always ignored dealer's "advice" and follow the manufacturers rec's, no matter what brand I was driving. My Chev Avalanche with similar VCM and about 50k miles goes about 13k miles between oil changes and it doesn't burn enough oil in-between changes to add more.

They're copping out. No way that is normal. My 08 V6 Accord with 30K hasn't burned one drop of oil ever. Its still on the full mark when I drain the old oil and I've never had to add anything between changes.

You need a new Honda dealer, what a load of bull..... Ask them for an oil consumption test.
Since my engine shortblock and heads were replaced due to oil consumption 1 qt per 1000 miles, I have 16K on new engine I am now at 1/4 qt at 3000 miles from LOF.

BTW I have a 2008 V6 coupe AT

The service department just added another quarter and a half of oil after 3,000 miles. In talking with a couple of the mechanics, they mentioned that they have a lot of unhappy customers with the V6 engine because of burning oil. The other bad news was that the brakes need to be replaced (less than 20,000 miles). Apparently Honda's brake supplier provided brakes that didn't meet the metallic content that Honda specified but Honda is trying to make the customers pay for the replacement. Great car company.

The brakes on my 08 LX 4cyl. 5MT are still very good (at least 60%) at 22k miles. Lucky, I guess.

Accordguy0325,

How much did Midas charge you for the break job? Were that front or rear brake pads/ shoes? If Honda brakes are not good I'll have Midas replace my brakes.

I got only 13K miles something on my '08 V6-EXL. No problems so far, except the tire pressure light was lit on months ago. I took my car to a Honda dealer and the guy showed me quickly that I was low on tire air pressure.

i've not had any problems with my v6 other than poor gas mileage. i've got 47000 miles on my 08 accord and normally drive about 80mph. it doesn't use any oil at all. i check it weekly and it has never needed any. maybe it is the way i broke it in...i still believe in the old way of breaking in a new car...run it as fast as traffic allows for the first 1000 miles and floor it as much as possible. in fact, i usually run it to top end as soon as i drive it off the showroom floor. i believe in setting the rings. i've had only 1 car in my life that i had engine problems with and it was due to breaking it in per factory recommendations. that car used oil and had poor performance. i learned my lesson. i get about 22mpg combined.
