First Look: 2009 Nissan GT-R

A Lap of the Nurburgring in the 2009 Nissan GT-R - One of the primary performance objectives set forth by the Nissan GT-R's development team is to lap the Nürburgring's Nordschleife faster than a 997-based Porsche 911 Turbo. The 2009 Nissan GT-R had circled the famed circuit in 7 minutes and 55 seconds during endurance testing earlier in the year, trailing the 911 Turbo by 15 seconds. (more)
 
First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R (JDM Spec) - Unlike most supercars, the GT-R doesn't sit only 2 inches off the ground, so it's easy to slide into the driver seat. AWD Vette
 
This is a perfect example of Corvette reverse-engineering off of some GT-R ideas. That would make them both front-engined, AWD. They would both have roughly equal balance, but the Vette would be lighter and more powerful. This could get interesting. Its a constant game of one-upmanship, and there is never any permanent winner. Its just waiting until the next guy steals your ideas.

"reverse engineer" is a bad term. "kept and throw away" what they liked isnt good term either. Nissan didnt reverse engineer the 911 turbo to create the GT-R.
 
nothing on the GT-R is a copy of the 911 turbo. absolutlely nothing. Nissan never needed to copy anyone. they just studied everything about the car to see what set it part from the others.
 
but thats a bad term "reverse engineered." no ideas from the 911 turbo was stolen and used on the GT-R.
 
Im sure the head of porsche bought a GT-R and is using it as a benchmark like nissan did with the 911 turbo. if they are smart they would.
 
i agree with you on the vette comments. ii;d rather just get the ling vette and have even more powr than the zr-1.
 
i like the zr-1's looks and at the same time i dont. it looks good in one glance and in another it looks like a hot wheels car. zr-1 looks like a kid designed it in a way to me.

Perhaps not totally reverse-engineered, but the 911 turbo was the benchmark car. Nothing was copied exactly, but they more or less have the same functions. Nissan entering the game later gave them an opportunity to look at what others had done and improve on them. Is there a better term? I can't think of it.
 
Similarly, the Corvette going AWD can only be a reaction to the GT-R. They have to be looking at specifics on the GT-R to reflect their own improvements. It is a quid-pro-quo environment.

"Studied meticulously" is the term i'd use. using the 911 turbo as the benchmark.
 
porsche better be diong the same with the GT-R.
 
but i can see the vette going mid engine well before AWD. i dont see it giong AWD ever, im not a vette fan and i wouldnt even like to see that. but chevy was saying in the motor trend or car & driver article when they had the 2012 vette on the cover last year. the yellow vette look looks like a ferrari. that in order to keep up with everyone else. they are going to have to make the vette mid engine.
 
and thats another thing i dont like about the vette. chevy is copying ferrari way to much. so much that vette are starting to resemble ferraris. thats not a good thing

Both of our articles are pretty dated. And I can't find anything dated 2008 on either topic. Hard to say what they are planning, really.

The video of the full test says the GT-R reaches 0-60 in 3.2 seconds, "The fastest the fastest production car they have ever tested". Although, the article says the 3.2 seconds was with one foot of rollout. Why did they say it was the fastest production car they ever tested?

To my knowledge, only the Motor Trend test uses a 1' rolling start for all their tests. They did get a 3.2 second 0-60 time using their typical method.
 
That 3.2-second zero-to-60 mph time ties our best runs in a Porsche 911 Turbo and a 911 GT3-R, and trails only the Ferrari Enzo (3.1 sec) and Bugatti Veyron (2.7 sec) among production test cars. Our 11.6-second quarter-mile time ties the mighty Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR's, but 13 other supercars manage to squeak ahead of our GT-R's elapsed time. Its trap speed of 120 mph is neck-and-neck with the Porsche 911 Turbo's, but at least 20 different models we've tested can top that figure. Perhaps that's the revelation here: Nissan's everyday-usable supercar is at its most super at everyday speeds. Beyond 110 mph the mythical beast becomes increasingly mortal, as illustrated in this graph.
 
I saw at no point where MT claimed it was the fastest car they ever tested.
 
I think you might have them mixed up with Edmunds,which tested it at 3.3 seconds from a standing start. Their claim was that it was the fastest production car they've ever tested. And they might be telling the truth. Perhaps they've never tested the Veyron or the Enzo.
 
Or perhaps the GT-R's launch control + AWD covers that first 1' in 0.1s, whilst the competition has more wheel spin. That's probably why they differentiate themselves by testing from a rolling start: to measure the 0-60 time, not just the launch control.
