What is this discussion about? Nissan GT-R, Coupe

First Look: 2009 Nissan GT-R
- Due for its much-anticipated unveiling at the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show, the 2009 Nissan GT-R will finally arrive in the U.S. next spring. Nothing will ever be the same again. (more)

A Lap of the Nurburgring in the 2009 Nissan GT-R - One of the primary performance objectives set forth by the Nissan GT-R's development team is to lap the Nürburgring's Nordschleife faster than a 997-based Porsche 911 Turbo. The 2009 Nissan GT-R had circled the famed circuit in 7 minutes and 55 seconds during endurance testing earlier in the year, trailing the 911 Turbo by 15 seconds. (more)

First Drive: 2009 Nissan GT-R (JDM Spec) - Unlike most supercars, the GT-R doesn't sit only 2 inches off the ground, so it's easy to slide into the driver seat. This is a Japanese-market car, so we're on the right-hand side, which makes everything feel awkward. The seat is firm and narrow, and the high center console gives the cabin a tight, cockpit-style feel. (more)

Full Test: 2009 Nissan GT-R (Japanese-Spec) - We know you want the numbers and we're not going to waste your time. Neither is Nissan. Its 2009 GT-R hits 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, quicker than the last Dodge Viper, Corvette Z06 and Porsche 911 Turbo we tested. (more)

Full Test: 2009 Nissan GT-R - Bottom Line:The GT-R delivers a rare combination of speed, agility and technological sophistication. It's a bit of a cold fish, but for $76K, we'll deal. (more)

Car and Driver tested the Z06 3.4 seconds to 60, 1.01g's on the skid pad, 144 ft breaking from 70 , well under 8 secs. to 100 and under 18 secs. to 150(17.5 secs to be exact) in the 12/05 issue against the Viper(ShockWave). 207 mph in a three car comparison where it whoop the ferrari f430 and 911 turbo in every performance catagory possible(Sports Car World Cup 9/06). Motor Trend (Target Z06, 6/06) did repeated stops from 60 in a mere 104 ft and 289 from 100. Motor Trend (10/05 2006-2007 new cars) did a full battery of tests on the than new ZO6 and accomplished breaking again from 60 in a mere 104 ft besting just about any production car out,1.05g's on the skid pad and the quarter mile in an incredible 11.5 sec. at 127.1 mph. The slolam speed is also north of 70 mph as well. Those numbers sound to me like they're as good as or surpass the 911 turbo and the very over weight Nissan GTR by a good margin. The only area where they best the ZO6 was on the Nurburgring in which the ZO6 did it in 7:42 secs. on STOCK RADIAL TIRES unlike the Nissan GTR(7:38 secs. or the 911 Turbo(7:40 secs.) both of which were wearing STREET LEGAL RACING SLICKS. Level the playing field and put a pair of STREET LEGAL RACING SLICKS on the ZO6 and see how fast it embarrasses both cars.

0-60? by 2005goat

When did 0-60 become a benchmark? "Man, that car stomped me in the 0-60!!!" hahahahaha

The fact is, all the Nissan lovers are comparing an all wheel drive car to a rear wheel drive car (Z06), and a naturally aspirated car to a forced induction car. Not exactly apples to apples, and the GTR still comes up short. Why is it that the GTR out runs the Z06 in 0-60, but not the 1/4 mile (according to Motor Trend and Dragtimes slips)? The answer is simple, because the Z06 is a performance car that makes horsepower throughout the entire powerband, and the GTR falls flat on its face between gears waiting for those turbo’s to spool up, not to mention the power/weight ratio comparison.

So, go buy a $80,000 ricer, and I will stick with a $70,000 American made muscle car. In addition, with a pair of street legal slicks on a Z06, I will embarrass you on the track and the road course.

There is one advantage to the GTR, any high school kid or soccer mom can drive one to its full potential because it does not require a mental giant to launch an AWD car, so the lack of real driving/racing experience is not an issue.

However, the GTR has a 25% parasitic drivetrain loss that you can do nothing to improve, and the Z06 is in the 15% range, with lots of options to improve traction without sacrificing horsepower to the wheels…

I do not believe for a minute that the nearly 3900lb Nissan GTR will do a 0-60 in 3.3 seconds, even with all wheel drive. The car is just too heavy. The 911 turbo with all wheel drive does it in about the same time (3.4 secs.) and it weighs about 300-400lbs less and has 65ft lbs of torque more with 5 more hp. This to me is not just about 0-60, it's about over all performance and in over all performance the GTR cannot keep up with Zo6 on a level plaining field. It is all hype to TRY to over throw the Zo6 not only the best performance car for the money but one of the best production performance cars PERIOD. The japanese feel left out in the performance arena being that every sports car they ever made was a piece garbage. There is a reason that after 2 or 3 years they discontinue them. This a way to try to get themselves into the lime light. They should stick to making econo-boxes. Give a them a 1yr or 2 and they will discontinue the GTR as well.

According to this article, the 475 Hp is actually at the wheels hp and not at the crank. Nissan might be underrating the HP of the GTR just like they did for the old one. Horspower might actually be in the neighborhood of 550. That would explain a 0-60 time of 3.3 seconds for a 3800+ lb car
http://www.motorauthority.com/news/supercars/nissan-gt-r-dyno-475hp-at-the-hubs/- - -

A few days ago we were talking about Nissan wanting to get the GT-R to an SAE-certified 480hp so it would match the Porsche 911 Turbo, one of its chief rivals. It looks like that should be an easy feat if the dyno numbers coming out of Japan today are solid - and it looks like they are. According to testing done on a Dynapack dynamometer, the new GT-R pumps 482PS (475hp) to all four hubs, with torque peaking at 580Nm (428lb-ft) at the hubs.

Assuming parasitic drivetrain losses around 15% - although the loss could be even larger given the GT-R’s all-wheel drive platform - that would put power at the crank around 550hp and 495lb-ft of torque - absolutely insane numbers for a 3.8L engine, twin-turbo or not. Suspicious? Head on over to NAGTROC, the North American GT-R Owners Club forums, where poster Chuck H has links to photographic evidence of the testing, complete with shots of the dyno screen.

While these numbers seem to fit more aptly with the GT-R’s 3800lb curb weight and its scorching ‘Ring times, it still seems odd that a car with a drag coefficient of 0.27 would top out at anything under 200mph with 550hp under the hood. Maybe there’s more to this story than meets the eye. We’ll keep you updated as things unfold.

Thanks to Jeff for the tip!

Reguardless of rearwheel hp the car still weighs at a porky 3800lbs. There are cars out there that have as much if not more rearwheel hp and a lot less weight that aren't doing what this car is suppossedly doing. Even with suppossed 550hp the cars power to weight is still not much better than that of a 2008 Z51 Vette. On top of that the GT-R would need the extra hp to off set the extra weight that the GT-R is lugging around. A ZO6 has 440 hp at the rear wheels according to a magazine that I had recently read which means that even with 550 hp, the parasitic draw from the awd would be sapping a good majority of that hp leaving the GT-R with 475 which is only 35hp off the ZO6. If those figures are correct, the ZO6 would still come out on top give its much superior hp/lbs ratio of 7.0lbs per hp versus 8.1 lbs per hp.

C 'mon guys, think. by hsquared

There's more to a car's off-the-line acceleration than it's power-to-weight ratio. The gt-r uses a quick shifting dual clutch gearbox which, according to what I've read, shifts quicker than any human can manage with a conventional manual. Also, I'm sure it has to have relatively short gearing. That, along with the grip of the car's awd, might account for acceleration that some posters find "unbelievable". No doubt the Nissan engineers have other tricks up their sleeves that are beyond the grasp of us mere mortals. Then again, maybe Edmunds and Nissan are in cahoots.

The 911 turbo also uses a quick shifting dual clutch gearbox, all wheel drive and weighs some 350lbs less and gets whooped by the ZO6 baddly(car and driver 9/06 sports car world cup)not to mention that it spanked a ferrari f430 hard, a car that also uses a quick shifting gearbox that shifts 100milliseconds or less. If the ZO6 could embarrass a work of art like the ferrari f430, a car that has a true racing pedigree just think what it would do to that bloated overweight jap mobile. The GT-R may have a quick shifting gearbox and all wheel drive but it needs it to move around the nearly 2 tons of car. The ZO6 makes up for the lack of all wheel drive with one of the lowest power to weight ratio in the production car world. The ZO6 may not have all wheel drive but than again it doesn't need it, the ZO6 weighs 650lbs less with wider tires. Not to mention how bad it outperformed the $106,860-$121,559 911 GT3 at VIR on a 4.2 mile track by 3.6 secs. another car with racing pedigree that is set up strictly for track duty and destroyed the 911 turbo by 7.6 secs. a $123,760-$141,510 car. The ZO6 has already showed that it will get in there with cars that cost more than double its price and destroy the competiton by a huge margin, so until the bloat-mobile whoops a Lambourghini, Ferrari or a Porsche, competition that already learned it's lesson by suffering at the tires of the ZO6, the GT-R has a lot to prove.

Is the GT-R (or the Spec V for that matter) going to hang with this bone stock Z06, with drag radials? Bone stock people, just improved the traction...

Tire mod, and a driver mod only...incredible!
