Yes, I figured you were talking about the Z3 M Coupe. It's a great sports car and it has a large enthusiast following too. It also should have been included (or at least mentioned).

As for the E30 M3 - no it's not really known as "M3 Coupe." It's just the "M3."

You can also call it the "original M3," "E30 M3," or "real M3."

I thought this article seemed a little too well writen for Edmunds. Then I found it was excerpted from the latest issue of EVO.

It's not really an M car, but what do you think of the 1er tii Concept Car Munich unveiled in Tokyo? I'm not too wild about the stripes, although the reverse script on the front bumper is a cool homage to the 2002 Turbo. If it makes production I might add it to my list, especially if it is fitted with a proper LSD.

The UK car mags have adopted an irritating habit of introducing a twist at the end of their bake off articles in order to produce a slightly unexpected result. Top Gear are the worst offenders, on print and screen.

Reading the article, the E46 M3 is the best - they have nothing bad to say about it at all, yet they introduce some wishy-washy sentimental BS to justify the E30 M3 as the best. Their favorite maybe, but it's not the best.

Would you believe I didn't know about the tii?!?! I don't care for the boyracer CF hood and 19" wheels, but anything that makes the car lighter, lower, and more aerodynamic is OK in my book.

"wishy-washy sentimental BS to justify the E30 M3 as the best."

There's nothing "wishy-washy" about the E30 M3 Sport Evo (Evo III). It's a true driver's car of the first order - one of the finest sports cars of all time.

BMW only built 600 of them, and none of them crossed the pond to North America. My M3 is a mechanical (but not cosmetic) clone of the original Evo III, and is easily the best handling (and most satisfying) sports car I have ever driven. It simply blows the E46 away.

Having driven both cars extensively, I'll take the E30 M3 as well.
I know this will be considered blasphemous, but I find my Mazdaspeed3 and Club Sport to be more entertaining to drive than a regular E46 M3. A Competition Package car may be another matter...

I've never driven the E46 with the Competition Package, but I'm certain (from the specs, anyways) that it doesn't hold a candle to an authentic, Europe only, CSL.

But whether we're talking about the CSL or not, the E46 M3 is simply too big and heavy to compare to the very compact, 2600 lb E30.

I've never driven the MazdaSpeed3. Are you talking about the M3 "Club Sport" package?

Are you talking about the M3 "Club Sport" package?

Nope, it's a somewhat rare -less than 300 produced- model that was offered on the US 318ti in 1995. Externally it features the M3/M Technic side moldings, side skirts, front bumper, mirrors, and rear diffuser. Inside were sport seats with specific black Montana leather and red Millpoint cloth and stitching. The suspension was the European M Technic calibration with 16" round spoke wheels. The only options were premium sound, limited slip, and a sunroof. My car is one of no more than five that were ordered without the sunroof(my salesperson had to put up a bit of a fight to keep the bloody thing off my car) Here's a picture of the European version, which didn't get the M3 mirrors:

My only complaint is that the car could use a bit more power than the 140 hp M42 engine can provide in stock tune. That said, in a couple of years a stroker motor will cure that problem. It's seen more than a few track days and has proven to be dead nuts reliable. I'll never sell it.

Very nice. Although I never warmed to the car, I know the ti has quite a loyal following, and it's well deserved thanks to it's light weight and nimble nature.

Forget the stroker - why don't you shoehorn an LS1 in there like one of our local club members did.
