What is this discussion about? Honda Fit, Hatchback

First Drive: 2009 Honda Fit - Inside the Fit's cabin, it's apparent that quality levels are up, with improved plastics, more supportive seats and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Meanwhile, a new dashboard layout looks softer, reflecting a special effort by stylists to appeal to women. (more)

2009 Honda Fit Sport Full Test - Bottom Line: If only every sequel were so good. It's as if Honda used our long-term test blog about the 2007 Fit as a road map for the 2009 model's improvements. (more)

That's awesome. There's a 3D VR thing on there that rocks.

Is there any news whether they are bringing the CVT over here on the next model? My wife doesn't drive MT cars and I don't like automatics so this would seem to be the best compromise.

The last I heard was that the 2009 USDM Fit would have 5MT and 5AT, like before. This is a credible but unconfirmed (by me) story. Stay tuned.

Thanks!

Any word why they are balking on the CVT? I've heard nothing but good things about it.

Not sure. Honda clearly has no problem, technically speaking, using the CVT everywhere else in the world.

However, no one drives in the world as much as North Americans do. My theory is that Honda is not totally convinced of the durability of its own CVT. I know that a couple of years ago Honda announced that it would start producing its own CVT pulley belts, and they are now making them (before, Honda was buying 100% of the CVT steel belts from Van Doorne of Holland). I don't know for sure, but it is possible that Honda is waiting to see whether or not their internally-produced CVT belts actually have the durability to last 100k miles and more, which is requisite in the North American market.

Anecdotally, the Honda CVT today is known to "loosen up" after about 100k km (not miles), which, if true, would be considered defective in North America.

It's all my own conjecture, though. I will ask around for the true story about this.

I'm anxious to hear if and when you find out more on the CVT! Thanks again for your insight!

I'm hoping we get CVT on the new Fit. From what I gather about CVT it's more efficient and gets better gas mileage than the AT. The bigger and heavier and 13 more hp Nissan Versa CVT gets the same city/highway mileage as our current Fit Sport AT. If CVT is good enough for Mexico, it's good enough for the U.S. and Canada .

Was checking around, but still cannot verify one way or the other. By this time Honda should have finalized the USDM specs, esp. transmissions, but no one would confirm.

The '09 has an adjustable drivers seat, but from the photos I've seen, I like my current Fit's interior/exterior style.
