What is this discussion about? Honda Fit, Hatchback

First Drive: 2009 Honda Fit - Inside the Fit's cabin, it's apparent that quality levels are up, with improved plastics, more supportive seats and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Meanwhile, a new dashboard layout looks softer, reflecting a special effort by stylists to appeal to women. (more)

2009 Honda Fit Sport Full Test - Bottom Line: If only every sequel were so good. It's as if Honda used our long-term test blog about the 2007 Fit as a road map for the 2009 model's improvements. (more)

I have to admit, I don't usally jump into the middle of a back and forth between bloggers but I literally felt compelled to say the following two points regarding the Ford Fiesta comments.

The first is as someone who has owned just about every brand of foreign and domestic vehilcles over the years, I find it hard to believe that anyone who has owned a Honda or even a Toyota for that fact would say that a compact Ford is a better car especially long term.

The second is why would anyone who was that passionate about Ford's be in an '09 Fit forum to begin with trashing Honda's? If you feel that strongly about the Fiesta, then stop wasting the time of people who have a vested interest in talking about the Fit and go hang out with the Ford guys!

As long as they can keep them running that is...

Greg,
According to your definition of lugging, I do not actually lug my Honda engine. I never run it below 1500 RPM. I also never "stand on it" while running along easily at 1500 RPM and 30 MPH. Since I have been driving autos from the age of 14 and since I have raced cars, boats and motorcycles, I have a pretty good handle on operating engines. (I'm 65 now!) Not to mention 17,000 hours of operating aircraft engines. Anyway, I agree with your caution about low RPM operation/low oil pressure and I avoid stressing the engine at low revs.

An interesting thought came up as I was reading your post about the engine wearing and getting noisier. I am an AMSOIL DEALER, and as such, I tend to use AMSOIL in my vehicles. The AMSOIL website recommended oil for the FIT was for 0W20. So after break-in, I switched over to the 0W20 wt and used an Amsoil EAo filter (which are really good BTW). To my dismay, the engine got noisier. It definitely got buzzy at mid RPMs. I switched back to Quaker State Synthetic 5W20 and the buzz went away! WHEW!

I will write to the engineers at AMSOIL and recommend that they change their website recommendation for the FIT. That 0W20 wt. is just too thin.

BTW, those AMSOIL EAo oil filters go down to 15 microns absolute and will keep my diesel oil clean for 3 or 4000 miles before it gets dark. I have never seen any normal type filter behave like this one. It is designed to run for 25,000 miles too.

Back to the new improved Fit engine, it seems to operate much like the old one, only better. I am just nearing the end of my first tank of gas and I bought the car on October 6th, so the fuel mileage would appear to be similar to the older Fit. I figure I will pull at least 700 km (420) miles out of the first tank.

Cheers Pete

I've been visiting this site for months now, since I started considering buying a Fit. Went thru all the angst (spare tire or no spare tire) and decided to order one. Paid sticker for my Sport automatic - no money down, no add on- and it's worth every penny. Ordered it in white and then started doubting the choice - thought that a funky car deserved a funky color- but I love the white. It really stands out.

I've got 2500 miles on it now and it's getting between 33 and nearly 37mpg, about 3mpg less then the thingy says it's getting but I'm not complaining. GPS is great (I have no sense of direction so that's one thing that drew me to the car) and it's not that hard to run.

All in all... it's a real keeper!

Thanks for your support in this lunacy of a debate. Some people are so loyal to a product or a team that they cannot be objective. I actually ordered my '09 Fit Sport months ahead of time, before even driving it, just based on two criteria: past history with Honda vehicles and the stellar reviews from so many different publications. Road and Track, Car and Driver, and Motortrend all raved about the Fit. US News and World Report's recent exhaustive study of all vehicles in all classes ranked the Fit as #1 in the hatchback category. End of story...

Did I test drive a Fit? Why would I. I already know about how dismal Honda's quality is first hand. I sat in one at a dealership while I was having more work done on my wifes Odyssey. I couldn't imagine being hit by another vehicle while I was in one. It looked like a tin can inside. And I thought the Odyssey had bad fit and finish. The Fit takes it down several notches to purgatory. Go back to the circus with the rest of the plaid suit gold chain wearing Honda salesmen. As if you didn't know, I have already invested in a Honda product. The Honda Odyssey is taking me and my wife right to the poor house (towed behind a wrecker, of course) . Yeah, great investment. Go troll somewhere else.

He's right. Don't believe what you read in most every automative magazine about the Fit because this poster has the better overall indication of Honda quality based on his one purchase, which of course accurately represents the other hundreds of thousands of vehicles Honda sells. Honda will probably go out of business too based on the experience of this Edmunds poster

After sitting countless times in Honda waiting rooms, you start talking to the same people that have problems. THE SAME PROBLEMS, that is, over and over again. Like I said before, the only positive opinions on this forum are probably coming from Honda sales people.

Couldn't ask for a better sub-compact. Topped gas tank for the first time ( $1.47.9 per gallon) and the guage read 38.6 mpg for 295 miles city driving. Very comfortable and smooth driving. Got a Tidewater blue and everyone admires looks.
I don't know how Honda could improve this vehicle. Love it.
