What is this discussion about? Honda Fit, Hatchback

First Drive: 2009 Honda Fit - Inside the Fit's cabin, it's apparent that quality levels are up, with improved plastics, more supportive seats and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Meanwhile, a new dashboard layout looks softer, reflecting a special effort by stylists to appeal to women. (more)

2009 Honda Fit Sport Full Test - Bottom Line: If only every sequel were so good. It's as if Honda used our long-term test blog about the 2007 Fit as a road map for the 2009 model's improvements. (more)

Yes, lets hear it for the Airwave wagon. This vehicle is all that the Fit is and more of it. CVT is very good. Wagon style body is very good. It looks like you fit a Fit into some real good goodies to come up with: Presto! The airwave is born. Kudos!!!!

Whether you drive on gravel or pavement, the rear window will be grimy and should not be wiped without the window washer squirting simultaneously.

This is another case of a design engineer up in an ivory think-tank tower.**

I guess you have to turn off your wipers before shifting into reverse, or giving a squirt with the rear window washer before shifting into reverse.

** Like my first GM Nav system that shared the same slot as the CD player...lost with music playing...or navigating with only the radio playing.

HELP!

Someone made a reference to the Airwave a while back which I had never heard of so I asked the forum what it was and dweiser was nice enough to post a link on 10/20 providing pictures and I hate to say it but now I'm really confused.

If everyone's indicating the '09 Fit is based on the Airwave's platform then that makes since but some of the posts make it sound like the '09 Fit is a direct comparison to the Airwave which based on the pictures, looks like a minivan to me.

Someone please put me out of my misery with some clarification because it's obvious that I have entirely to much time on my hands!

Thank you!

I could also use more info on the Airwave. Though I don't know how the host will feel about discussing that vehicle in this thread.

That said, although from the pictures the Airwave may look a bit like a minivan such as the JDM Odyssey, in reality it is a much smaller vehicle; it is a small wagon. But compared with the Fit, it has much more cargo space and a larger hatch opening.

I don't believe the 09 Fit is based on the Airwave platform. I believe the Airwave is based on the same platform as the 08 Fit. But that's just my own guesswork from looking at key body points such as the A pillars and little triangle windows, as well as the windshield itself. Those points seem to match up with the 08 Fit, not the 09 Fit.

Anyway, the closest anyone in the USA is ever going to get to one of these is a picture on the internet.

And how long have you been working for Ringling Brothers? If you are one of THOSE people who only buy imports than you are a idiotic misguided media whore. I don't listen to the stock market. I make my own decisions based on my judgement. After owning a Honda Odyssey that had to have two transmsiion rebuilds before the 20k mile mark ( along with rotor replacement, dash rattles, DVD player skipping, oil leaks), I do know about Honda so called misconception about quality. Its a lie!

Don't base it all on the Odyssey. That is the most unreliable Honda. Most are not that bad!

I couldn't disagree more. I love Toyota. I have a 2008 Highlander Sport and I love it. I took the Scion XD, the Yaris hatch, and the Nissan Versa for test drives. Nothing felt or looked as solid as the Fit. I would also take the Versa over the Scion or the Yaris.......in fact I did. I just put a deposit down on an 09 Fit.

The Yaris and the XD both felt cheap to me and neither of them has the versatility of the Fit.

Did you ever consider anger management classes? A classic line from Shakespeare applies: you "protest too much." To repeat, I've owned Hondas for a quarter of a century with NO problems. As for minivans, don't get me started on our original Plymouth Voyager. Talk about Ringling Brothers: what a joke! Dude, did you even test drive a Fit before you trashed it? Maybe you should begin to "listen to the stock market" a little more: you might make some $ by investing in Honda products....

I have to admit, I don't usally jump into the middle of a back and forth between bloggers but I literally felt compelled to say the following two points regarding the Ford Fiesta comments.

The first is as someone who has owned just about every brand of foreign and domestic vehilcles over the years, I find it hard to believe that anyone who has owned a Honda or even a Toyota for that fact would say that a compact Ford is a better car especially long term.

The second is why would anyone who was that passionate about Ford's be in an '09 Fit forum to begin with trashing Honda's? If you feel that strongly about the Fiesta, then stop wasting the time of people who have a vested interest in talking about the Fit and go hang out with the Ford guys!

As long as they can keep them running that is...

Greg,
According to your definition of lugging, I do not actually lug my Honda engine. I never run it below 1500 RPM. I also never "stand on it" while running along easily at 1500 RPM and 30 MPH. Since I have been driving autos from the age of 14 and since I have raced cars, boats and motorcycles, I have a pretty good handle on operating engines. (I'm 65 now!) Not to mention 17,000 hours of operating aircraft engines. Anyway, I agree with your caution about low RPM operation/low oil pressure and I avoid stressing the engine at low revs.

An interesting thought came up as I was reading your post about the engine wearing and getting noisier. I am an AMSOIL DEALER, and as such, I tend to use AMSOIL in my vehicles. The AMSOIL website recommended oil for the FIT was for 0W20. So after break-in, I switched over to the 0W20 wt and used an Amsoil EAo filter (which are really good BTW). To my dismay, the engine got noisier. It definitely got buzzy at mid RPMs. I switched back to Quaker State Synthetic 5W20 and the buzz went away! WHEW!

I will write to the engineers at AMSOIL and recommend that they change their website recommendation for the FIT. That 0W20 wt. is just too thin.

BTW, those AMSOIL EAo oil filters go down to 15 microns absolute and will keep my diesel oil clean for 3 or 4000 miles before it gets dark. I have never seen any normal type filter behave like this one. It is designed to run for 25,000 miles too.

Back to the new improved Fit engine, it seems to operate much like the old one, only better. I am just nearing the end of my first tank of gas and I bought the car on October 6th, so the fuel mileage would appear to be similar to the older Fit. I figure I will pull at least 700 km (420) miles out of the first tank.

Cheers Pete
