First Drive: 2009 Honda Fit - Inside the Fit's cabin, it's apparent that quality levels are up, with improved plastics, more supportive seats and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Meanwhile, a new dashboard layout looks softer, reflecting a special effort by stylists to appeal to women. (more)
2009 Honda Fit Sport Full Test - Bottom Line: If only every sequel were so good. It's as if Honda used our long-term test blog about the 2007 Fit as a road map for the 2009 model's improvements. (more)

The 2007 models where the Base looks like its missing something and the Sport is just right - with the 2009 model, the base looks just right and the Sport looks overdone. I really hate that odd looking steering wheel and the red gauge cluster. I know its preference but I find the red lighting to be tiresome after driving with it a while. I love the 2009 Honda base front. Not sure about the rear and side, it is starting to look like a Mercedes though. I noticed the new CRV and Accord takes some lines from Mercedes like Mazda takes cues from BMW. |

| Agree, they may regret the removal of the spare and the resulting run-flat requirement. Re: engine and performance, would be interesting to see them drop in the 2.2 litre diesel currently offered in the Euro-Accord (our Acura TSX body). 134 HP and 251 ft-lbs of torque would move it along quite smartly and it'd sip fuel. Not likely to happen but a 3-cylinder version would be more appropriate and still perform well. (And yes, I believe they could make a 3-cyl run smoothly.) | |

So let's see: They made it bigger and heavier. They gave it more horsepower. Crude oil is up to $81.66 a barrel according to NYMEX. And that price has not yet filtered back through the refining system into gas prices. Insanity. As much as I don't want to admit it, Honda is no different than any of the other carmakers. VW also comes to mind here. They apparently have not yet figured out that the price of oil is not going to drop. EVER. Sure it might go down on occasion, but over time it will continually go up. No new fancy tech is going to create a new fuel with the same energy density as oil. Alternative fuel will always be more expensive and less energy dense. Somebody mentioned the Civic that got 44 mpg in the 70s - if they could do it then, they can do it now, even with the weight penalties of air bags and other safety equipment. Give me a Fit that gets 40 to 50 mpg and I'll buy it. Along with a lot of other people. One morning soon we all are going to wake up and find that we really need that kind of gas mileage. I'd rather have a car like that now while I can still get it for a reasonable price. Or at all.

| For $775, including $225 for a TRD rear sway bar and $500 for a TRD shocks and struts kit, you can upgrade the suspension of the xD, to deliver better handling. On paper these upgrades look appealing, but since I haven't driven the xD, I don't know whether these items are worth the money, what the net improvement would be, and how the car performs and handles with these upgrades. Would they put the handling on a par with a standard (non S) Mini, or close to it? How would it compare to the Fit? Can anyone here comment on this? | |

I'd like to see the Fit get better MPG in the future, but for now, what other car has 21CuFt behind the 2nd row, storage under the 2nd row, an upright seating position for easy entry/exit and for easy access to kids in the 2nd row carseats, costs $16K, gets in the mid 30s MPG, has great handling characteristics? I can't think of any. Yes, you could get a few more highway MPG with a Civic or Corolla, but then you wouldn't have the versatile and roomy interior. |

The rigidity of the new car is amazing, and they are still using the same size engine, but with a new (for the fit) vtec application that sucks more hp AND (take note of this ok?) will probably deliver the same if not better gas mileage. Why is this a reason to complain? |

Replying to: way2goslick (Sep 27, 2007 11:45 am) while maybe 95% of the civic YOU SEE may fit this description, not all of them are like this. The people who do do it are not real honda enthusiasts, as they wouldn't butcher the car in such a manner. The reason for the whole fast and furious thing is actually funny; the reason a lot of kids with no knowledge do it is the same reason you even know about it, and its thanks to this movie, which introduced the whole concept (unfortunately) to a whole lot of people who had no idea. If you are really out there for balls out performance, a warranty is useless. If you are talking about a stock car that does well AND has a warranty, then ok, the 350Z would fit your bill...IF you have the money to buy it, which a lot of people don't. Maybe these cars in stock form will keep up with a modded civic, but it depends on the mods. My buddy has a 95 civic with a turboed 1.6 litre engine and 350z's are cupcakes. The cars he has 'difficulty' with are hotted up corvettes and a shelby mustang that he couldn't outrun because of his lack of a sixth gear. Hardly a loss, considering his car only took about 7 grand to get it were it is. Can you imagine the way the mustang driver felt, even though he was victorious? Heck, putting the new k series into an older civic usually yields an 13 second quater mile, and thats naturally aspirated! Honda's don't weigh much and that has always been a honda priority, and (for those of you griping about the weight) they are usually (notice i said 'usually') ligher than the competition. Its the reason why a car like the si can keep up with a much more torque laden gti; the gti weighs significantly more. The performance potential is huge, and yes it is worth it. But performance has to be your priority. |

| 95% of Honda Civic drivers do absolutely nothing to their cars besides put gas in them. But putting that aside, I never really understood all the anti-Honda hate on wings and the fart can exhausts. Let the kids have their fun. Who is more of a poseur a 19 year old with a Civic that has more wing surface area than a 747 or some fat cat in a ragtop Modena who could drive it over 6/10ths without staining his BVDs? My opinion is the latter and you seldom see them hated on. | |
