What is this discussion about? Honda Fit, Hatchback

First Drive: 2009 Honda Fit - Inside the Fit's cabin, it's apparent that quality levels are up, with improved plastics, more supportive seats and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Meanwhile, a new dashboard layout looks softer, reflecting a special effort by stylists to appeal to women. (more)

2009 Honda Fit Sport Full Test - Bottom Line: If only every sequel were so good. It's as if Honda used our long-term test blog about the 2007 Fit as a road map for the 2009 model's improvements. (more)

And nav will NOT be standard. It is not standard in Japan, not anywhere.

NAV will be standard on the '09 Sport

...from LeftLaneNews:

"The Sport model is the range-topping trim level and boasts a long list of standard features, including a navigation system, 6.5-inch screen, USB connectivity, and steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters."

Well I test drove a fully-equipted Prius the other day and I was surprised that it does not have either seat-height adjuster or telescoping steering wheel. This is a car that when all priced in cost almost $10k more than the Fit and has nav, keyless ignition, back view camera, bluetooth and all these fancy features.

for those very short people, perhaps a thick seat padding can help. I am 5'5" and I feel rather comfortable in a current Fit.

Right now I am wondering between getting a Prius or waiting for the 09 Fit Sport. I like them both but if the gas gets over $5 a gallon it's getting more and more appealing to get the Prius. Among all its "fancy" features, the backview mirror is the most useful, as I often have to struggle parking in very tight spaces in New York City.

Toyota vs. Honda by thegreatoz

(meow)...in the midst of you two, permit me to toss in my 2-cents...

1. Quality at Toyota has left the building.

2. Hybrids are hyly-overrated. I know, that's like doubting Global Warming. Too bad...

I owned an '04 Civic Hybrid. Drove it for two years. You'll never recoup the higher cost in gas-savings unless gas goes to $8+ a gallon. There's even a group of 'tin-foil hat' people now asking for a study into the dangers of driving with all the ELF radiation from the 144-volt wired car chassis.

3. Honda is tops in quality.

I have an '06 Hydrocarbon Civic (which gets only 5mpg less than my '04 Hybrid Civic). I have an '06 RidgeLine...which gets a measly 17mpg, but hauls mulch like a MoFo'. I've got an '07 Civic GX not going anywhere until I can get the Phill installed in my garage. There's natural gas piped in already.
My wife won't drive the GX (I got it for her); she says it's a "rolling bomb."

4. I'm personally waiting for an '09 FIT Sport and giving the '06 Civic to my son this Fall.

I will bet you a very large sum of money (less than $.01 though) that the 2009 Sport will come in four versions:

Sport 5MT
Sport 5MT with nav (so, nav is "standard"!)
Sport 5AT
Sport 5AT with nav (so, nav is "standard"!)

Ala the top-end Civic EX, which comes in various trims, some with nav and some without.

I'm with you backy! That's exactly how my '06 Civic came..."CIVIC EX NAV"...with Navigation built into the base price.

I hope the nav will not be tied to the stability control option. I want the stability control but not the nav. I can get a top of the garmin nuvi unit w/ bluetooth and all the other bells and whistles for a lot less, and i can take it to another car when necessary. It's also a lot easier to update maps w/ the portable garmin unit. Garmin can pronouse street names, which is a must for me. Does anyone know what the current Honda nav unit is like?

The Navigation on the Honda has several nice features over the GM Nav units. I use both.

First, the Honda has a security feature that makes you enter a password to go to the Personal Destination menus. For instance, if you're car-jacked, the thief can't get turn-by-turn directions to your house. That would not be good, since he probably also has your house keys on the car keyring.

With GM, a thief has directions, plus your garage door opener built into the overhead console!

Under the "Go Home" button, enter the address of the local police station...and name your home "Wendy's" or "Wal-Mart."

Second, Honda's Nav does not make you come to a complete stop to enter commands or make menu selections. I don't recommend typing in street names and numbers while driving, but it is nice to enter "Detour" "Change Route" without grinding to a halt or pulling off where there's no shoulder on the road. GM makes you come to a complete stop, or be moving under 5 mph.

I recommend using the Voice Commands with both Honda and GM, for safety.

By the way, Honda's Nav has two separate password-protected User Menus for a second driver. You certainly wouldn't want your spouse driving to your mistress' apartment. NOTE: always delete the "Recent Destinations" list in such a case.

Neither system has "text-to-speech" like the better portables now feature.

The nice thing about GM's Nav unit, it is usually coupled with a rear-back-up camera.

With the recent rash of thefts of portable GPS units, it's comforting to know that a built-in-dash navigation system will discourage break-in, unless they want the whole car.

Map updates (annual) are no problem. The first update (on DVD) is free.

If you're inclined to take your Honda to a dealer for service, every Honda and Acura dealership nationwide is marked with an icon on all maps.

That's a good point. The one I want is the Base Fit, with 5AT and VSC (no nav of course). I wonder if VSC will be a true option (which Honda doesn't do very often), or a trim. That would make the list of trims pretty long!

I was planning on buying a MB C-series, but with the continuing high prices of gas, I'm very serious on buying this wonderful car. My first car was 89 civic. Gave it to my brother-in-law. And it is still running strong. Right now, I have a '99 Toyota Sienna(familyvehicle) and a '99 Honda Civic LX(work vehicle) with 80,000+ miles. It still runs smooth, but when I saw the new upgrade of the Fit, I want one!!! With all the safety features and conveniencies(Navigation, Ipod connection), I'm pretty sure this is going to be another success for Honda. You always wonder why american cars are always behind...
