What is this discussion about? Honda Fit, Hatchback

First Drive: 2009 Honda Fit - Inside the Fit's cabin, it's apparent that quality levels are up, with improved plastics, more supportive seats and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Meanwhile, a new dashboard layout looks softer, reflecting a special effort by stylists to appeal to women. (more)

2009 Honda Fit Sport Full Test - Bottom Line: If only every sequel were so good. It's as if Honda used our long-term test blog about the 2007 Fit as a road map for the 2009 model's improvements. (more)

I read and hear a lot of what the FIT has in Japan, but I've yet to read/hear any of these so-called "official announcements" from Honda-America for the NA FIT.

Meanwhile, I'm negotiating with my local school district to buy natural gas for my Honda GX until I get Phill inStalled in my garage. On the West Coast, Phill is free.

The Fit that was shown off when the U.S. 2009 Fit was announced did not have a height-adjustable driver's seat. But it did have a telescopic steering wheel.

I should clarify that all discussions I've been privy to involve the Sport exclusively. The options/standard features will likely be very different from the base '09 model. The US Sport version will be closer to the Japanese version, though not nearly as tricked as the RS there.

However, adjustable driver's-seat height, a glass roof, and the bigger sunroof are not off the table for the Fall in the US. Trust me.

I'm very OK with a 22 pound increase

Where are you getting that spec?

...right here on Edmunds...

"The wheelbase has been increased 2 inches to 98.4 inches, while the overall length goes up 2.2 inches to 153.5 inches. The Fit is also 0.8 inch wider, while the front track is 1.4 inches wider and the rear track is 1.2 inches wider. It's surprising that the overall weight gain is a meager 22 pounds."

New for 2009, owners can now choose between front and all-wheel drive.

AWD? Truly? Mymy, Honda must have realized Suzuki hit on something with the SX4, perhaps. If true anyway.

Thing is though, that article was written by a contributor in Japan in Sept, 2007 prior to the debut/unveiling of the US 2009 Fit at the New York Auto Show in March this year.

The 153.5 inch overall length he mentions is shorter than even the current US Fit. So obviously that is a JDM spec. So my guess is that the length and weight specs mentioned in the article pertain only to the new JDM Fit, not the US 2009 Fit. (The width and wheelbase specs would apply to both JDM and US cars.)

In other words, I think he is comparing the old JDM Fit to the new JDM Fit.

I hear ya' and agree, moochocatz...

I'm 6'0" and the FIT, like the Beetle, has a 'disappearing hood' even for my height.

Those little pump-up levers add hardly anything to the design/mfg/price of a driver's seat...so why take them out of a North American version?? Certainly not to save money.

And nav will NOT be standard. It is not standard in Japan, not anywhere.

NAV will be standard on the '09 Sport

...from LeftLaneNews:

"The Sport model is the range-topping trim level and boasts a long list of standard features, including a navigation system, 6.5-inch screen, USB connectivity, and steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters."

Well I test drove a fully-equipted Prius the other day and I was surprised that it does not have either seat-height adjuster or telescoping steering wheel. This is a car that when all priced in cost almost $10k more than the Fit and has nav, keyless ignition, back view camera, bluetooth and all these fancy features.

for those very short people, perhaps a thick seat padding can help. I am 5'5" and I feel rather comfortable in a current Fit.

Right now I am wondering between getting a Prius or waiting for the 09 Fit Sport. I like them both but if the gas gets over $5 a gallon it's getting more and more appealing to get the Prius. Among all its "fancy" features, the backview mirror is the most useful, as I often have to struggle parking in very tight spaces in New York City.
