First Drive: 2009 Honda Fit - Inside the Fit's cabin, it's apparent that quality levels are up, with improved plastics, more supportive seats and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Meanwhile, a new dashboard layout looks softer, reflecting a special effort by stylists to appeal to women. (more)

2009 Honda Fit Sport Full Test - Bottom Line: If only every sequel were so good. It's as if Honda used our long-term test blog about the 2007 Fit as a road map for the 2009 model's improvements. (more)

I don't like CVTs. I thought the 09 would have a 5-speed auto.

The new name for the "Magic Seat" is "Dive Down".

I think the 09 will have a spare tire. I think the repair kit is JDM only.

My Ridgeline has those lift-up rear seats. A good design.

I would think the US market would demand some sort of spare. I have an '01 Vette without a spare, but those are Goodyear Run-Flats.

A friend of mine with a FIT keeps bottoming it on speed-bumps and rutted roads. If I recall, the gas tank is spread out over the undercarriage. It can't be too good to keep banging on that, or hitting rocky roads.

What don't you like about CVTs? Performance? I guess I'm lazy and got spoiled not feeling the shifts in my old Civic.

Yup, no CVT for the NA Fit. It's 5-speed manual and auto. And the NA Fit will have a spare tire. And nav will NOT be standard. It is not standard in Japan, not anywhere.

Yeah, I agree with jacksan1.

Oz's '09 specs are for the japanese version.

The official US Honda website states a 5 spd man or auto and nav, VSA as options.

Maybe Oz can read the japanese on the JDM website?

Actually, what Oz wrote doesn't, for most parts, jive with the JDM specs, either. There are tons of options available for the JDM Fit. By the way, in Japan, the Magic Seat has always been called the "ULTR Seat" (sic), and with the new (current) generation, they have added the "ULTR Luggage" by eliminating the spare tire, which will not be the case for the NA Fit.

I'm very OK with a 22 pound increase

Where are you getting that spec?

I wanted to touch base with you regarding your comment about the spare tire.
Does this mean the new US '09 Fit will have a spare tire because I was under the impression from the auto show unvelings that it didn't which ticked a lot of people off and I wanted to know if you've heard one way or the other for sure?

Thanks!

Sorry if I was blowing smoke; I was simply passing along info from two Auto Show videos (NY and Tokyo) and a Honda FitNut salesperson locally.

When I learned the SmartCar sold in Europe has a sweet diesel engine, and the US version has a Toyota Yaris engine, I knew we'd gone to hell in a handbasket.

(Not sure where that icon came from, but I hope someone gets that abandoned car out of my driveway!)

According to LeftLaneNews.com:

"While buyers in Japan can choose from either a 1.3-liter or 1.5-liter powerplant, only the latter is offered in the U.S. New for 2009, owners can now choose between front and all-wheel drive. Transmission choices for the new Fit include a five-speed automatic, a five-speed manual and a CVT automatic."

and...

"The Sport model is the range-topping trim level and boasts a long list of standard features, including a navigation system, 6.5-inch screen, USB connectivity, and steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters."

...my emphasis.
