First Drive: 2008 Audi A8 - No matter how good the steering and suspension might be, there's nothing like standing on the loud pedal and letting 'er rip. The 4.2-liter V8's eight cylinders hammer hard, while twin turbochargers help sink your skull back into the headrest with the swell of torque starting from just 1,600 rpm. (more)

My wife and I went to our local Audi dealer in July originally to look at the A6. On the way to that car, we passed through the showroom, where they had an A8. True to her priorities, she headed straight for the back seat. "This car has plenty of room, and I like the amount of headroom." Previously, only the Toyota Avalon had passed this test. When we then sat in the A6, the smaller feeling and marginal headroom in the back seat was striking. I'm not that tall (6'1"), but most cars still feel cramped to me.
We went back inside and test drove the A8, and it was wonderful. Plenty of reserve power, no matter the speed, and a smoothness and quiet you have to experience to believe. The changes for 2008, though minor, are in the few areas where any improvement was possible. The best I think is the lane change assist, as blind spots are a problem in any car. Next best is the added quiet via insulation change in an already quiet car. The grill is an improvement; they're playing with that the way Lexus has on the LS400+ series. Turn signals on the mirrors are always nice, but far from a custom touch, and surprisingly behind the times; other cars (even trucks) have had them for some time.
Bottom line, after test driving the 2007 A8 I ordered a 2008 model (scheduled for early December delivery). At the time I didn't know anything about the "tweaks" for 2008. I had owned a 1993 Lexus LS400, but sold it in 2 years because while luxurious it wasn't fun to drive. The Audi is most definitely fun to drive. I am also looking forward to that B&O stereo system. I think the article was right on the money. For those who want a car with a sharper edge (mentally and physically), there's the BMW. For those who can sort through a myriad of confusing models, there's Mercedes. But for those who want the best car, there's Audi, and specifically the A8L.

Congratulations on your new A8! It is one of the best, if not the best, premium sedan in its class. The Four Rings is where it's at!
