I think one thing that's lost on this comparison (and the entire LT test) is that a 2005 Lotus Elise can be had for around 30k.
 
Granted the Elise lacks the name, the unabashed sex appeal, and the sentimental value of the Ferrari, but it can run circles around anything else available for the price, and be reliable, at least in theory, thanks to the Toyota powertrain.

It's been pretty carefully figured out that an old Ferrari will cost you about $1--$1.50 per mile to drive.
 
So 5,000 miles, be repaired to write checks for $7,500.
