I have enough trouble keeping stuff around my house working. You know it's just a matter of time before something else expensive breaks. Well, on that car, anything that breaks is going to be expensive. Edmunds is spending $11 just on a quart of oil for it.

| A friend and I drove his 1984 Ferrari 308 from Colorado Springs to Las Vegas. We packed 2 very small bags into the trunk and off we went. It was a joy hearing the engine as we drove I70 through the mountains. The next morning the car sounded like a jet engine as it warmed up. When we hit the desert heat exhaustion quickly set in. Once in Las Vegas we found our bags were so hot that the labels on our toothpaste tubes had melted off. We couldn't drive the car during the day because it would overheat by the 2nd stop light. Driving home we took I40. We had to switch drivers every 2 hours because the sound of the engine at a constant speed would become so hypnotic the driver would start nodding off. It was a lot of fun to be sure | |

Great comparison... I can't tell you how many discussions I've been in where friends and I were discussing this very issue. With horsepower in abundance these days, a common car like a Honda Accord V6 would likely give your Ferrari a serious run for the money. I recently bought a 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet. Pretty similar to your Ferrari, 50k original miles, 205 HP when new but only 2,600 lbs curb weight. A bit less money (about $18k) but a lot lower operating cost than the Italian Stallion. No power steering, useless A/C, but a usable trunk in the front and some small back seats for the duffle bags. For the minivan, we skipped the $30k+ version and got a Mazda5 Touring with a manual trans which costs under $18k. Best of both worlds, baby!

| I have a 79 Ferrari 308 GTS, and this article cracked me up. Good stuff. For what it's worth, I can tell you that a lot of modern cars are much faster, but I have not driven many that can match the Ferrari's handling - which is incredible considering it is an almost 30-year-old car. It really is a joy to drive (even in the heat). | |
