I like the way you think.

I'd substitute a Miata for the Porsche to save another $10k+ but either would make a nice stablemate for a Mazda5.

I have a 79 Ferrari 308 GTS, and this article cracked me up. Good stuff. For what it's worth, I can tell you that a lot of modern cars are much faster, but I have not driven many that can match the Ferrari's handling - which is incredible considering it is an almost 30-year-old car. It really is a joy to drive (even in the heat).

10 bucks says Christie Brinkley is faster and has better handling and traction than either vehicle.

LOL, I already have a Miata, a 1991, and it's parked next to the 911. Great car and I can probably buy another 1991 Miata for less than the cost of a valve adjustment on a Ferrari 308.

I have had both for 21 years. 911 every day driver 240,000miles; Ferrari 42,000.The F is beautiful after all these years, the P a classic. At speed F hunkers down & is on rails-P gets light on nose at 130mph.P has storage, visibility, easy in & out;F limited storage, tuff in & out & limited vis.

Bikers, grandmas, teens , rice rocket drifters All give a thumbs up when I drive the F. I get people in parking lots saying what year the P is and someday they want a P. I am planning on writing a story on my two old exotics. I feel blessed in owning these two.

1984 Ferrari 308 vs. Honda S2000 by habitat1

I actually considered buying a 308 back in 2001, but chickened out. The one I looked at was actually more expensive - about $32,000, exactly what I ended up paying for a new 2002 Honda S2000.

Ferrari 308:
230 hp and 188 lb-ft of torque.
0.91 lateral g's
0-60 in 7.3 seconds
1/4 mile in 15.4 seconds at 92.1 mph
Redline - around 7,500 rpm

Honda S2000:
240 hp and 153 lb-ft of torque
0.92 lateral g's
0-60 in 5.4 seconds
1/4 mile in 13.9 seconds and 101 mph.
Redline - 9,000 rpm

The biggest thing that kept me out of the Ferrari was the fear of breakdowns and expensive repairs. I was leaning towards going for it, when the owner explained that "it should be fine for another year, I just had $8,000 of service done 3 months ago".

I ended up keeping the S2000 for 2.5 years, 19,000 miles. Spent a little under $400 in total service during that time. Averaged 23 mpg; 30+ on the highway.

BUT, you have to love a car like the 308 that looks like a rolling work of art and will still turn heads 23 years later. When I took the one I was considering out for a test drive and stopped at a gas station, a guy next to me hopped out of his Mercedes and was so trasnfixed by the 308 that he walked right into a light pole and just about broke his nose.

Hey Steve - If Edmunds ever wants to sell that car, let me know. I may have grown a little more backbone since I chickened out in 2001.

They sound sweet. But can you drive either to Newfoundland?

Don't forget the canoe!

I think one thing that's lost on this comparison (and the entire LT test) is that a 2005 Lotus Elise can be had for around 30k.

Granted the Elise lacks the name, the unabashed sex appeal, and the sentimental value of the Ferrari, but it can run circles around anything else available for the price, and be reliable, at least in theory, thanks to the Toyota powertrain.

Cost to Own by Mr_Shiftright HOST

It's been pretty carefully figured out that an old Ferrari will cost you about $1--$1.50 per mile to drive.

So 5,000 miles, be repaired to write checks for $7,500.
