In my experience the Escape has adequate ground clearance for mild off-roading but does not have a true locking differential for muddy steep climbs and no lo-range for steep rocky descents. Jeeps are much more confidence inspiring if you're in the middle of nowhere in the mud. Also in my experience, the odd years of Escape are more reliable...don't really know why, but they are(2003 and 2005) Hope this helps, since replys on this forum seem to be few and far between.Good Luck!

Keep in mind that you won't be able to get parts in Gabon for a Ford Escape as they were never sold there.
Look for something that you could buy there new. and here used.
Mark.
