Hi, there. I'm looking for a good SUV to take with me for my first overseas assignment to Gabon, along the coast of western Africa. It's a very tropical country and I'll be taking it into the interior to see some of the national forests. The driving can get erratic, I've heard, so am expecting to run into other cars occasionally. These are my requirements: 1) High clearance is necessary. 2) Can the Ford Escape's catalytic converter be removed, and later replaced upon my return to the US, without complications to the running of the car? 3) I'm looking into a used Ford Escape (because of the driving style over there), so any model year I should be wary of or other problems to know before going into a Carmaxx?   I really appreciate the help! Replying to: genuino (Sep 11, 2007 5:12 pm) In my experience the Escape has adequate ground clearance for mild off-roading but does not have a true locking differential for muddy steep climbs and no lo-range for steep rocky descents. Jeeps are much more confidence inspiring if you're in the middle of nowhere in the mud. Also in my experience, the odd years of Escape are more reliable...don't really know why, but they are(2003 and 2005) Hope this helps, since replys on this forum seem to be few and far between.Good Luck!
