May be they are talking about this. Does not seem like a big deal and it could be damaged:

"For manual transmissions, there is a center differential lock button on the dashboard that manually locks the front and rear axles. Toyota recommends that it only be used only in difficult situations, and that the center differential can be damaged if used improperly."

I've lost my hope to read an accurate review on Edmunds. It's incredible how they don't have a clue about the cars they are supposed to compare. The 4WD Lock option in the RAV4 is as "lockable" as in the Outlander and it works similarly. There is no traditional fixed 50:50 split in the "Lock" position. The torque distribution is still variable, electronically controlled, depending on the driving conditions. However, it disengages above 25 mph where in the Outlander it stays active until the driver changes the position of the knob.
I think Edmunds should start paying us for educating its editors.

The many flaws in this comparo really makes the ranking irrelevant.

The RAV4 and Santa Fe have already been written about in another Edmunds comparison test: "Small All-Wheel-Drive SUVs".

Next month we're going to have a feature comparing the comparison articles.

The current crossover count is 95 make/models btw, of which 79 are lumped in with SUVs. (link)

It's interesting how the new Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner or Saturn Vue were not included in this comparison. Could it be because one of them might just have made number one? Edmunds couldnt have an American win now could they.

You've hit the nail on the head, Jack... No Escape, no Vue, no Torrent, and no Nitro. Cmon Edmunds. There's no excuse for this.

Read about them here:

Could it be because one of them might just have made number one?

That's silly. It was a ranking of a set of four vehicles out of collection of four vehicles. Nothing more, nothing less.

Choices Choices... by mirde98

Of course the comparasion should include more vehicles, then again Toyota and Honda coulda won the comparo as always been for years and years, im never surprised in comparison tests. Its always a Honda or Toyota. No matter how bland and boring the are. Anyway, thats why theres choices for different tastes. I personally prefer the Mitsubishi Outlander. Its very sporty and fun. The Rockford Fosgate stereo is a blast. Rear gate is cool. And the exterior style is masculine and sharp. But then again thats my humble opinion. All the suv's tested are very good and they appeal to different tastes. So theres alot of choices out there in the market.

The CX-7 won the small SUV comparison last year.

Comparison Test: Small All-Wheel-Drive SUVs

A few years before that, the Escape won the 2001 Mini SUV Comparison Test

Like you say, lots of choices.
