I'm really disappointed that Edmunds did not include the Hyundai Santa Fe in this comparison test. I think it competes most directly with the RAV-4, and Consumer Reports ranks them 1-2 in this segment.

I don't own one, but these are the two vehicles in this segment that we actually would consider--and I'm still left wondering if the RAV-4 is worth the extra cost compared to the Santa Fe. Seems like a glaring omission.

Interesting, but I disagree. The CRV seems more convenient because of the swing up lift gate vs. the antiquated swinging gate w/ a spare on the RAV. The CRV is the best selling suv for good reason and you ranked it third?

RAV? by chelentano

The swing gate on RAV4 was a major turn off for me. Toyota did not bother to change the design to open the gate to the other side. Besides there is not much going on in RAV besides powerful and efficient V6. The Outlander’s 3rd row is tiny just because it’s smaller car. The 3rd row is good for kids, there is little chance anyway, that you gonna carry 7 adults.

I don’t see how in the world the Outlander could be on the 4th place and the RAV on the first?

As you could see above, the consumers rate t Outlander higher vs. t RAV4. They do it consistently on all three major auto sites: MSN Autos, Yahoo Autos and Edmunds.

And why the Edmunds "experts" say that The Lockable all-wheel drive system is not available on Outlander?:

Then what this Outlander's knob is for:

The comparison states that the Outlander lock is not a lock but a rwd bias awd setting.

May be they are talking about this. Does not seem like a big deal and it could be damaged:

"For manual transmissions, there is a center differential lock button on the dashboard that manually locks the front and rear axles. Toyota recommends that it only be used only in difficult situations, and that the center differential can be damaged if used improperly."

I've lost my hope to read an accurate review on Edmunds. It's incredible how they don't have a clue about the cars they are supposed to compare. The 4WD Lock option in the RAV4 is as "lockable" as in the Outlander and it works similarly. There is no traditional fixed 50:50 split in the "Lock" position. The torque distribution is still variable, electronically controlled, depending on the driving conditions. However, it disengages above 25 mph where in the Outlander it stays active until the driver changes the position of the knob.
I think Edmunds should start paying us for educating its editors.

The many flaws in this comparo really makes the ranking irrelevant.

The RAV4 and Santa Fe have already been written about in another Edmunds comparison test: "Small All-Wheel-Drive SUVs".
