"Chrysler has been putting the same defective transmission in their Caravans for over a decade. The Feds never bothered them"

What do the Feds have to do with a Class Action Lawsuit? I question whether the Feds could even force a recall by a foreign company. If you remember, several years ago one of the German companies (either Audi or BMW) cars had a defective transmission, and it was jumping out of park and rolling forward. Several deaths occurred. Unfortunately they never recalled or admitted the defect, and the US government could not force a recall by a foreign company.

Actually that Audi thing may have been misrepresented:

That was the Audi 5000 and it was another victim of a so-called "60 Minutes Investigation". If I recall correctly, it was determined that the whole thing came down to morons who couldn't tell the difference between the accelerator and brake. I personally tried to make an Audi 5000 override its brakes--left foot mashing on the brake and right foot fully into the throttle. The car wouldn't budge.

Audi was exonerated in the DOT investigation. Of course, the truth couldn't help Audi which almost went out of business in the US. Some good came of this travesty: the Audi debacle resulted in the addition of an added safety feature--the one that requires you to depress the brake before starting a car with an automatic transmission.

Yes vinny, I read that in the referenced site. I find it fascinating how the media can pull crap like that, and until I googled it, and read that site, I was still under the impression that Audi screwed up. Never saw the rebuttal, Audi's side of the story before.

Chrysler has made a number of changes to their transmissions over the years, and the bulk of their problems went away with changes in 1999 and regular fluid changes. How can you say that it is the same unchanged transmission when it has gone from a 4 speed to a 5 speed? My 2000 has 172XXX on its original. When I bought mine in 2000, I fully expected transmissions issues. Later a transmission mechanic told me "Chrysler is getting smarter about what they are doing in their transmissions."

I don't defend Chrysler or Honda, I believe they both did their best. Nonetheless, despite having the same troubles many still believe Chrylser = bad Honda = good.
If I were Honda, I do exactly what they are doing. I just see both companies on par with each other. Neither has horns or halos.

My company provides SWB Caravans for company cars, has since 1994. We're required to keep them 80,000 miles before we get a new one. My coworker has 114k on his, he's hung on to it longer, holding out for a 2008 Grand Caravan (since the SWB Caravans are history). I've had 3 since 1996 - 2 company provided, 1 personal. Friends and family have had many Caravans. I can not name a single person I know, who's had transmission problems. Guess some people have all the luck, and some no luck - Honda and Chrysler alike.
