You know I think VAG is suffering from Domesticism. Every brand must have a version of every other brands platform. Now VAG does a better job of it since they don't do out right rebadges but they are still doing it.

Off the top of my head.

Cayenne/Q7/Toureg/Future Lambo SUV?

A3/GTI/Golf/Beetle/TT/future A1 to compete with MINI

Jetta/A4/Passat/A6/A5

A8/A7/Phaeton/Continental GT/Flying Spur

Boxter/Future R4/maybe a really baby lambo

R8/Gallardo/

Future R10/Murcielago

Tiguan/Roxter or future Baby Porsche SUV/Q5

I am sure there are others I am forgetting.

I live in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. and am likewise intrigued by this decision. Washington is a power center and certainly popular for lots of different organizations (commercial, as well as non-profit and government), but manufacturers are not usually the ones looking for headquarters in this part of the country.

Then again, this area is quite international and cosmopolitan in character (no dissing Michigan or anyplace else that is not), and lots of German nationals living in this area, there is a German school and the German Embassy in Washington hosts lots of open houses. Also the German military has a "base" of sorts right near Dulles Airport. And Dulles Airport has become a big international hub with lots of flights to Europe.

But this one still doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I would have thought that if they moved out of Michigan, it would be to the New Jersey suburbs of New York, where the other U.S. operations of the European auto makers are clustered.

Maybe some exec wants to commute home every weekend and the move will save a couple of time zones flying to Hannover.

That was a problem with Nissan moving to Nashville - they lost a couple of time zones dealing with Japan. Closer to France and the Renault side of things I suppose.

Trust me, as a former resident of New Jersey now working in the DC/MD/VA area, this is a good move. New Jersey has too many issues (corruption, high property taxes, auto insurance, nepotism, cronyism) to make a move there financially viable. If it was my decision, I would move to Northern VA as well.

Don't get me wrong - I love NJ (I still visit friends and family there quite frequently), but nowadays, it has become a great place to be FROM.... NJ will not see me as a resident again in life.

I think it is a mistake to move to the Dulles area though if VWoA proves me wrong I'll be happy.
I love VW's lineup in Germany and it is the watered down lineup in the US that is the problem, not the lack of Amercanized, Camry like designs that is the problem.
