The big question by pf_flyer HOST

The articles raises the big question in a lot of people's minds... Where am I going to be able to fill up?
I'm in the middle of PA, and right now I'm not sure I could tell you where I would fill up a CNG vehicle.
I'm pretty sure there MUST be someplace around since there are buses and a few other vehicles I see that are running on CNG, but it really hasn't been on my radar.

Most CNG is dispensed from private or government fleet locations. Even CA has very few CNG public pumps. I think CNG is a commuter vehicle best filled at home with a PHILL unit. Same as EVs will be if they ever make it to market.

Define mpg by banhugh

You say that the average consumption of the CNG powered engine was 26.4mpg. How do you define mpg for a CNG engine and how much does a "gallon" of gas cost?

I live near Los Angeles, and I have no problems getting a fill up. There is one near my house. there is one near my work (30 miles away). there is one within 5 miles of every person I know and visit... maybe 30 or 35 people around southern california. I have never been in a situation where I NEEDED a fill and was not able to get one. I have been in situations where I needed a fill and didn't have time to get one... where it would have been easier to get Gasoline... but I've adapted to that and it hasn't happened in a few months.

Miles per gallon means just that... miles per gallon.

CNG is sold in and measured in GGEs - gas gallon equivelant - as far as the consumer is concerned they are pumping a "gallon" of natural gas into their vehicle.

There are better definitions of gge available, but the most basic way to think of it is the amount of natural gas required to produce the same amount of energy as a gallon of gasoline. Natural gas is measured in therms, and I believe that 1.25 therms is roughly equal to 1 gge - I am sure someone has the precise ratio.

Cost will depend on where you live and which stations you use - there is a thread on current prices. My local CNG is costing $2.03 per gge.

I have only experienced one problem due to lack of stations - it was in San Diego and both stations were down, I ended up getting a flat bed tow back to my local Orange County station.

I don't drive as much as I used to, but I was averaging about a thousand miles a week, and other than the minor problem in SD, it has been plain sailing - you learn to adapt and plan accordingly.

You Don't Have to Buy a Brand New Civic GX. by giorgi

The Honda Civic Gx was introduced in 1998, you can buy one used for about 8k for the first generation. I have a 99 and I love it, I live in the bay area and it's easy to find a station, and you can also fill up at the PG&E stations once you open a fueling account. They last easily 500k miles, gas is 2 bucks a gallon, you can drive solo in the carpool lane, save the environment, and stick it to OPEC all at the same time! What's not to love!

Is the Honda Civic GX (CNG) available in Illinois?? A lot of commercial vehicles in this area use CNG (COM ED etc) and I was wondering if it is readily available in the Chicagoland area???

Check the official American Honda site. Go to Civic GX, and select Civic GX Fleet. Put in your location under Find A Dealer and it will list any authorized dealers for the GX in the area. Best to call them to verify. If they say only sold in NY & Calif, ask to speak to the manager. Or come on over to Oregon and get one!

As for the fuel locations, go to:

Looks like you may need to sign up for a card access place.

you have stated that "they last easily 500k miles" Where does the data to back this up come from. I live in OK and drive about 50k (mostly highway) a year. I am considering buying a 2008 civic gx but am concerned about the longevity. Yours is the first comment I have seen anywhere, in my search, about how many miles you can realistically get out of a cng civic.

HELP!. Plan to purchase this week.

P.S. I have noticed many people talking about buying a Phill station for the home. I may not be to bright but at $4200 - $4500 and only getting 2000 gge out of it. That adds $2.00 a gge to the cost of running your car. Any help with my understanding. Of course I have been told I could by the bigger unit for 10k and it would pump 4000 gge. hum? still doesn't calc out to me.
