Full Test: 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 by Mazdaspeed Accessories - he factory-tuned version of the Mazdaspeed 3 is a preposterous pocket rocket that straps nearly 300 horsepower to a chassis riding on a racetrack-type coil-over suspension kit. All the good stuff comes from Mazdaspeed Accessories, so this is the Mazdaspeed Mazdaspeed 3 (Mazdaspeed2?).

I'd imagine a similar "explanation" could be used to blame transmission problems on a STS. You really can't blame Mazda for their position and I'm not ready to walk away from a 60,000 mile powertrain warranty on new car for a 5-10% power gain. I agree up to a point. If someone is running a piggyback ECU controller and/or a map clamp, methanol injection, a larger turbo, etc.- I think Mazda is correct to ashcan the warranty- especially if the car is spending every Saturday night at the drag strip. However, voiding a warranty for running a non-Mazdaspeed CAI is just ridiculous. At least Mazda isn't as bad as Mitsubishi; I've heard of Evo owners who have lost warranty coverage for hitting the rev limiter too many times. When you think about it, the stock power is plenty entertaining and hard to use it all on the street. True enough, but as I once heard Steve Dinan say, "Horsepower is like cocaine. You can never have enough." |

| I have some experience in warranty claims in another industry so I've given this some careful thought. When you make any mod that causes the ECU to change what it does, Mazda has a pretty good position to argue that it could effect almost any moving part in the drivetrain. Mazda may have been justified in its RMM defense depending on which product was installed. I understand some of them are so stiff they really do transmit a lot more vibration. I'm going with the cp-e which reportedly vibrates no more than stock. | |

Unfortunately, they chose to private label the MS-CAI from AEM and its a cheap piece. I'm really fond of the cp-e item. I've gotten to know those guys and they really do have some engineering talent there. They did their homework and invested the time and money to ensure that the MAF was happy (if its not, it kicks a CEL which is what the MS/AEM piece was doing). They've told me they have provided all their aftermarket parts to Mazda for evaluation. My hope it that Mazda ends up deciding to P/L cp-e's CAI when they re-introduce it. And I'm pretty sure they will (reintroduce, not go with cp-e) just because they've made a big committment to Mazda brand aftermarket parts, the business is growing 50% per year and they (and the dealers) make a ton of profit from it.
