I'm definitely going to fit the Mazdaspeed CAI; with an $320 street price it provides a lot of bang for the buck.

Don't forget the exhaust, they were designed to work together.

Half of you MF's used to be at Sport Compact Car, so its no surprise your hamfisted driving has found its way to the internet in earnest.

Why don't you go to Frank Hawley's Drag Racing school, I mean you couldn't do any worst than most MS3 drivers with the stock car.

I picked up 6 tenths of a mph in my car and it ran 12.74, so what are YOU doing wrong???

$5,000 for a tenth and .7 mph... What a waste.

Any moron that knows what they are doing would have gone a different direction with EVERYTHING you just did. Mazdaspeed, big deal they don't put there name on air freshers but neither does Ford Performance or Mopar Peformance and they actually give you Horsepower, Torque and Great Handling for about the same price as Mazdaspeed upgrades.

If I was a MS3 owner I would be pissed. This is the best they could do for $5,000??

For that amount an SRT-4 got Stage 2 coilovers and Stage 2 with Toys and Mopar cat-back exhaust. On Drag Radials it runs 12's at over 107-108mph. On streer tires and DAB 1 it runs low 13's

Call me next time you want to do some acceleration test and tell Mike Kojima I said HI...

i'm sure car and driver could have done better. at any rate, who cares what kind of numbers a stupid neon puts out? i don't care how much 'street racing tehcnology' went into it.

$5,000 for a tenth and .7 mph... What a waste.

I think you are a bit confused. They did not spend $5000 on the engine. The Mazdaspeed CAI is $520 installed, and the exhaust is $857 installed. That is only $1,377, and all parts are warrantied. To pick up .7 sec on just intake and exhaust is not bad.

Not to mention the suspension upgrades will just eat up the poor handling SRT/4 in the turns. For anyone, if you really want a drag car, get american muscle. Speaking of which, I'm almost done with my 1992 Mustang GT with a 347 stroker motor that is running 500 hp. I should be running low 11's.

My brother is running 12.9 in his speed6 with CAI and exhaust and boost at 17psi, up from 15.6. He shaved a full second off of his time, without spending very much. So, what Edmunds did is not bad, but, I think a better driver could have gotten some better numbers out of it.

C'mon lets be realistic. if you bought a spd3 so you could play around with it and maybe shave a 10th here or whatever you obviously bought it for the wrong reason. Real world, where can you use most of the power it has other than on fwy ramps. A10th off of what, the light at roscoe and woodley to the 405? Cross traffic, jaywalkers, laser, pop. Cars in this class are pretty much the same now. The driver makes the differance, period.I've been building and racing cars for 40 of my 55 yrs, and when i got beat [more than i care to think about] heads up, it was always the other guy, not his car.The spd 3 is a quick nimble hotrod.I bought it for those reasons and it's a blast to drive, and comfortable to cruise in. If i want to tweak on a car nowadays, i'll tweak on my '71 440-6pak superbee. Thanks for letting me have my say guys and gals, i look forward to reading all you stuff every week. fjt23

If you are looking to buy one or own a mazdaspeed3-read on.
Cp-e does make the best intake. But mazdaspeed intake is under warranty. Most intakes are good for 25hp,and allow you to hear nice "blow off valve sounds". Exhaust only gets you 5hp. So unless you only want the sound-don't waste your money. Best bang for the buck upgrades are: intake$(350.00-25hp), ETS brand topmount intercooler($550.00-20hp), engine management(xede, cpe standback, cobb accessport-when its released $600-$1000 for 50hp. all combined less than $2000 for minimum 340hp, 370+torque. Also all of these upgrades can be taken off in less than half an hour-if your dealer doesn't like seeing upgrades, which they probably don't. Good for Edmunds to do tests like this, rather than just boring new car content.I agree though that they do not seem to get thet same acceleration times as the magazines(always about .5seconds slower, must be the testing procedure?)

If you really want to lower your drag times, engine management is the best way to go. Void warranty? You bet ya! However, you can DISABLE the torque management system, and get all 15.6lbs of boost in all 6 gears. I believe CP-E's does this. The question is, how bad does the torque steer get once you do that? That would put drag times that would be equal to or better then the Neon SRT/4.
