Full Test: 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 by Mazdaspeed Accessories - he factory-tuned version of the Mazdaspeed 3 is a preposterous pocket rocket that straps nearly 300 horsepower to a chassis riding on a racetrack-type coil-over suspension kit. All the good stuff comes from Mazdaspeed Accessories, so this is the Mazdaspeed Mazdaspeed 3 (Mazdaspeed2?).

It may have to wait a bit. On 3/14 Mazda issued a stop sale order-with no explanation-on the CAI to all US dealers. Mine shipped prior to the order but I want to hear the reason before I install it. Yeah, that would make me wonder a bit too. Hopefully it's just an issue for the lawyers and not the engineers. |

Replying to: networkguy (Mar 16, 2008 7:14 pm) A couple of guys on the other Mazda 3 boards are reporting that Mazda is concerned about the fuel trim; it seems that the CAI can cause the motor to run lean and trigger the CEL. A few people think that the problem is caused by the lack of an air straightener upstream from the MAF, which in turn causes the MAF sensor to give a false reading. I believe that the only intakes which have a straightener are the CBE CAI and the Cobb SRI. This is just great. I buy the Mazda CAI to avoid any possibility of a warranty hassle, and now I'm stuck with a fancy paperweight until this gets cleared up. How come Mazda didn't discover this issue during the CARB certification process? Maybe they can correct it with a new ECU map- and the sooner the better... |

| Any word on when mazda will resume sales on the cai? No one seems to know what is going on. | |

I don't know what the variable is, and I don't think Mazda does either. The Cobb AP is supposed to come with a map for the MS CAI, but I hear that the AP won't appear until mid to late April.

Replying to: roadburner (Mar 20, 2008 6:57 pm) I wonder if the cars that do throw a CEL have had the shutter valve/EC update done? My car displayed the CEL a couple of weeks after purchase, when the weather got cold. The dealership did the valve replacement and re-flash before the official recall. I went through this whole winter without any issues. Granted, I don't have any CAI installed. |

Look out Mazda.....looks like Chevy built a serious player here in the compact rocket segment. According to Edmunds, the Cobalt SS is FASTER then the Mazdaspeed3. It raced to 60mph is 5.8 seconds and runs the 1/4 mile in 14 sec flat. I know that there have been numerous reports about the Mazdaspeed3 actually running much better times then those. Mazda advertises 5.4 to 60 and 13.7 in the 1/4 mile. Anyway, looks like the MS3 has a run for it's money.

Here's their First Drive Review. And I'll note that CD managed to get a 14 second quarter and a 5.4 second 0-60 time out of a MS3 in their May 2007 "Power Toys" comparison test. And if the SS still turns out to be faster? Even better! It just gives Mazda-and other automakers in this market niche-a new target to aim for. Competition ALWAYS improves the breed!
