I purched an 08 Astra XR 5 door in July. Love everything about car but auto trans. Don't like it when it shifts into neutral at stop light. When you start up again it seem to hit into gear hard with a jerk. The rest of the car I really like. Fit & finsh is very well done. This is a great little car.
Has the price gone up a lot? Mine has everything, XR, adv audio, sport handling, premium trim, leather seats, auto, no sunroof, total sticker price less tax was $21,655.00. Test car in article had a price of $26,300.00. Maybe not US dollars. Let me know.

Diesel engine as a choice, direct injection gasoline engine as choice, standard XM radio, standard armrest are the changes I'd like to see.

The exchange rate is actually OK now since the dollar increased in value compared to Euro, GM has an opportunity to price and market the Astra more aggressively since they are no longer losing money on each one imported.

Perhaps overseas models, especially diesels, are part of the solution to the woes of the North American market.

http://www.astraarmrest.com/ looks pretty solid for $149 and can be installed by the dealer if you have a pile of money.

http://www.irmscher-bitz.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=51&p- roducts_id=141 shows a European armrest choice.

The armrest on Ebay for $79.99 clearly shows several pictures of the armrest and easy installation. It is not as nice as the more expensive GM armrest for Saturns (with difficult installation). The $79.99 one does not have a cupholder (but it does have a nice storage compartment) and I would assume eliminates the one lousy cupholder that comes on the Astra.
The more expensive armrest gives you a VIDEO installation procedure. It does seem difficult...but it is a very good video with sound and very clear and concise instructions.
   Hope this helps.

Wind & Road Noise?? by CapeCod

Wind & Road Noise?
I did a quick search and neither were mentioned frequently.
I'm coming off 5 year ownership of a Pontiac Vibe. Within the first month I was complaining about the excessive wind rush noise.
I would like to know if Astra owners have similar problems with wind rush noise and road noise. Astra seems more sleek ??? Maybe that will help?
Also: will I be losing a lot of rear storage space going from the Vibe to Astra?
Comparison numbers say 12cf vs Vibe's 20cf but sometimes the numbers are misleading due to shape and/or bump outs ??

CapeCod, I can testify to the fact that the previous (2003-2008) body style Vibe was quite noisy, since I had one for a couple of years (2003 Vibe GT). I bought my Astra XR Coupe (three-door hatch, really) on Groundhog Day, and since then I've driven over 1,000 miles. I think it's much quieter than my old Vibe was. I traded in my 2005 Saab 9-3 Sedan on the Astra, and the Saab was a little quieter, but only a little. I am very impressed with my Astra. I love it, and I look forward to driving it when I get up in the morning!
As for rear space, I used the Vibe GT to carry my road bike, among other things, inside of the car (those roof rails on mine probably added to the noise). I have not tried to fit my bike into the back of my Astra, but there is definitely less space in the Astra 3-Door. The 5-Door Astra may be more useful for you if you have to carry lots of stuff. The Vibe with the seats down gave a nice flat load floor and about 54 Cubic Feet of Space, if memory serves. The Astra is definitely smaller than that. I am still glad that I got the Astra (and I looked at a new 2009 Vibe) because once you drive it around a few corners, the difference will become clear. You should definitely give the Astra a try! Good luck with whatever you choose.
