Replying to: swaybar (Jul 07, 2008 3:55 pm) The automatic version I believe comes with a traction control system of some sort to make it easier to start in the snow. Not directly related, but heated seats are available on all trim levels for only $250...

I'm holding out on getting the new Astra as reliability data are not yet conclusive. I know the Opels and Vauxhalls are pretty much hit or miss interms of reliability and the parts in Europe are especially expensive (approaching BMW expensive). The downside to Vauxhalls we've had in the past was longterm the cars weren't reliable + the parts were so expensive. 1. What has reliability been like so far for current owners fof both 3 and 5 door models? 2. Has anyone had to replace any non-warrantied wear & tear items and what were the cost(s)? 3. Has anyone taken any long road trips? If so how were the ride and useability?

Replying to: insidertrading (Jul 26, 2008 12:48 pm) Today, the reliability leader in Germany is an European-built Ford, not a Japanese car: http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.ef6c2da/1238 Post#1239 "... the current Focus has been rated the most reliable vehicle in its segment in Germany, outdoing all Jap and German brands...." I understand that Ford is cheating b/c they use Japanese-designed powertrains from Mazda.

Replying to: insidertrading (Jul 26, 2008 12:48 pm) I drive a five door and have had no problems to date (a bit under 4000 miles, 4 months of ownership). An undetermined (small, but not insignificant) percentage of people have had some check-engine light issues, although no breakdowns to my knowledge. There have been some issues with delays in getting parts. >> 2. Has anyone had to replace any non-warrantied wear & tear items and what were the cost(s)? n/a for me, but I have heard that the oil filter costs about $10. >> 3. Has anyone taken any long road trips? If so how were the ride and useability? Went on a 300+ mile each way road trip. No problem with comfort for me or my passenger. The radio has a convenient "autoscan" feature (at least in the base model) that picks out the nine strongest stations at any given time and presets them. Works great when traveling between cities and trying to find a station that doesn't play crap. |

| All was going well with my Astra until I hit about 6000 miles. It's been in and out of the shop since. First A/C problems, now engine problems. It's been at the dealer for the past 2 weeks and it is still not fixed. | |

Saturn sold about 500 Astras in January and has seen sales increase steadily since then, hitting nearly 2,000 units last month, spokesman Steve Janisse said. "It definitely did get off to a slow start," he said. "It's been pretty fun to watch it take off." And a price point under $20,000 makes the Astra a good first-car option. There's been a buzz factor in the blogosphere and on the social networking scene, he said. "It seems to be a hit with the younger crowd," Janisse said. http://www.sbsun.com/search/ci_10413237?IADID=Search-www.sbsun.com-www.sbsun.com- |
