If you lease a car and they limit you to 10,000 miles/year, they will charge you so much per mile over that limit. To me, leasing is a rip off.

But if you only do 10,000 miles a year you are fine. Jag/LR gives you mileage options starting at 10,500 miles a year then going to 12,000 miles, 13,500 miles, 15,000 miles, 16,500 miles, 18,000 miles and finally 19,500 miles a year.

If you do a lot of miles a year on an expensive luxury car then leasing at 19,500 or 20,000 miles a year is a good idea as the leasing formulas don't really accurately predict future value at high mileage levels. You end up making out much better then if you bought the car financed it for say four years and then tried to flip out of it in 20 months with 50,000 miles.

I am a current 5-series owner. I have a 2000 528i and have been thinking of upgrading for several years. I love this car, and really don't like the styling of the newer 5's, so I have resisted. I was told about the new XF and blown away by the styling on my initial investigation. Our local dealer had 3 on the lot, a base, a premium luxury and a beautiful vapour grey SC. I got the initial sales pitch that prob. every new potential jag owner gets--about the elegance, prestige, blah blah. Anyway, finally got to sit in it after the mandatory walkaround and inspection under the hood, in the trunk, etc. The salesperson drove off the lot and tried to amaze with the shift paddles--not too impressed since I've had "tiptronic" for 8 years now. Finally my turn to drive. Seat is supple and comfy. the gear selector is a little weird at first, but doesn't take very long to get used to. She asked to slow way down on the on-ramp to the interstate, then tells me to "floor it". It handled the curve well, but not as tight and solid as my old 5 series. Very quick--when I looked at the speedometer, we were doing 115mph and the car was still accelerating. When I slowed to cruise at about 80, the check engine light came on. I felt bad, but the sales lady told me to drive it the way I did. I asked about a break- in period and if we should have done what we did, and she said no need, just not to drive at high speeds for long periods initially. Of course I was alarmed at the light in a brand new car (68 miles). There also was an annoying rattling in the driver side door, also "unusual" per the salesperson.
To sum up, I think the feel is a little light. Plenty of acceleration, but the handling could be better. I am very nervous about the electronics considering it's a Jag and now owned by Tata motors of India. Also alarmed that they use regular non-synthetic oil--meaning a service every 5000 miles (although the manual rec. 10K, the dealer said it is better to change the oil every 5k). Considering the free maintenance at BMW, this would be a cost savings of thousands over 4 years.

I really had hoped this would be a better car. The cost is more reasonable than a similar 5 or E, but I doubt reliability will be comparable and cost of ownership will likely be much higher. I think I'll stick with the Germans.

Yes, that's seems like a good deal. Remember too, that MB will waive your last 3 months lease payments if you move into another MB...which gives you even more flexibility. It's really like a 24 month lease with a 3 month option to extend. Two years will fly by quick, and you might want a new CLS or move into the new E-class, S-class or just walk away altogether. Leases more than 30 months are always a pain as you tend to find you want out before the lease is up (new cars come out, better engineering/tech, etc.)

It's still much better than you would ever do on an XF lease. I was 99% ready to get the XF and had placed a deposit on one. The lease deals were...well, there are none. They lease at full MSRP with no incentives. The CLS and 550i lease rates you will find are much less. And the CLS generally lists for $10K+ more than the XF. Once I drove the CLS, I was convinced the XF was not worth $200+ more a month in lease paymnets.

Mileage is never a problem. I've leased 6 cars and have never once turned a car in at the end of a lease, thereby subjecting myself to mileage, wear/tear etc. You simply dump the lease before it expires by leasing or buying another car. The seller will then take the leased car off your hands. Depending on the FMV of your car, you might actually come out ahead, but worst case you lose one months payment if you exit with one month left (you pay that amount to the dealer), but if you have put on tons of miles and beat it up, that's a much better deal that turning it in.

Case in point. With a MB lease, you're required to do maintenance and the car's computer tracks it and displys when it's overdue. Turn in the lease one day before the 24K mile service is due, and I just save $800...turn it in one day later, they bill me for that. There are lots of strategies to leasing that can make it a better deal.

Ultimately, the bottom line is...if you don't mind driving one car for 5+ years, then BUY. Otherwise, lease, but make sure you're gettign a good deal (one great way is to shop other models....in this case, you'll see the XF deals suck).

I also drive a German car. S class MB. Now is time for my next car. Love the looks of the XF and feel I don't need as large a car as the S, but want 4 doors. Have driven the XF twice and had a positive experience time, although I did not put it through nearly as agressive test. Realiability and mechanics on my car have been superb. The thought of a bunch of nitpicky problems which I assume the dealer can rectify is holding me back from pulling the trigger on a XF. As I own my car I might let a few months pass by a see what kind of reports about come out. First year of any new model can have some issues.

It's also good to wait since, assuming the XF doesn't flop, they'll have a much newer, more powerful engine in next year's model. The base engine will likelky have over 400HP, with the upgraded version well over 500HP, with the prices not that dramatically different from the new XF models. This is another reason not to pull the tringer - sucks to get a brand new car and less than a year later your car is signficantly outdated by an newer model. Might as well paint "sucker" on your rear winshield.

When I bought my "S" it was one of the first ones out the door of the first year of a new model. Other than a suspension issue which MB took care of the car has been a pleasure. No little problems than can be quite annoying. Don't feel like I can trust Jaguar to deliver this reliability with a car in its first year of production. I look forward to hearing from new XF owners and their experiences in the months to come.

You're not making sense. No way Jag would have 400 hp as a base motor next year. R editions are coming, but there will be a substantial cost difference and you won't be able to get into one for a 50k base price.

People are very fuel conscious these days and while hp is very important, so is fuel economy for a lot of people. 300hp as a base and 420 for the super are quite good as compared to the competition.

BMW, Mercedes, and Audi all have motors under 300 hp as their base engine. BMW is under 250hp, Audi is 255hp for their A6. Mercedes is 270 or so.

A MB E class starts 52k for a 6 cylinder.

The XF is very fairly priced, and especially the Supercharged is a heck of alot of car for the money.

You guys have to realize that Jags never leased out that well. The XF mid 50 - low 60's does make the rest of their product look bad. Why would you cough up 80k for an XJ when can stroke a check for 20k less and get the XF.

Lots of people in this market segment pay cash for cars and have money to spend. Not everybody is worried about lease payments.
