Agree. I was such a big fan of the XF, despite the questionable front end, but the lease rates finally did me in. I went with the CLS today. I was never a big fan of the CLS either, until the XF lease rates forced me to compare.

1) 2008, CLS550, Black, P2 Package, IPOD, Parktronic, and AMG Sport Package. $2,500 drive off cost, $1,060/mo, 27 months.
2) 2008/9 Supercharged XF, Liquid Silver $2,500 drive off, $1,338/mo, 24 months.

The sticker on the CLS was about $81,000, but they marked it down to about $73,000 for the lease. Jaguar is not discounting its leases at all, so they are at full MSRP of $62,975. Then, CLS has the lease further subsidized by MB, better money factor and residual, so it ends up nearly $300 month less....for a more expensive car.

I drove both and love the XF. It has more technology that the CLS, but the CLS (despite lower HP) feels much quicker...it snaps you back in your seat whereas the XF never really gave that feeling.....not a car expert, but I think the torque/hp ratio or something is much better on the CLS. CLS rides smoother too. And, well it's a Benz, and one you don't see too much of vs. the E, C, etc.

Would have loved to go with the XF, but you'd have to be a complete idiot to take that lease deal when the CLS and 550i both have much better lease rates, by hundreds a month. They tried to tell me that XF is exclusive and few people will have them, but for that kind of rate I can see why few people will have them. The XF is better for buying right now vs. leasing. They will eventually have to lower these rates. It doesn't bode to well for Jaguar, and in the midst of an ownership change where it's rumored some that Tata will flip Jaguar off soon after the sale.
That, first model year, and insane lease rates means the the best action is to hold off on this. Sit back and see what happens, then move in if the rates get better.

For now, anyone shopping an XF would be well-served checking out the CLS or 550i. CLS is also a good deal as they are trying to move them before the 2009 comes out in about 2 months, and that car has really no major changes from the 2008 (2 bar grill instead of 4; led taillights; slight interior changes).

When my CLS lease it up, mabye the XF refresh at that time will finally solve the headlight heating issues and get them closer to teh XF-concept car, thus making it a much more beautiful car (and maybe tone down on all the "jaguar jewelry" as they told they call it....the excessive use of chrome).

For sale: One new, never usued XF keychain; One new, never used Jaguar travel coffee mug (fits in XF).

50% is the 36mo/45k residual. 36/36 is 52%

I too ran across the CLS550 lease deal but the dealerhip here offred me the following deal on a car with a list of $74,666. Drive off payment of $7517 and $875 per month for 27 months. Where are you located? What dealership? Am I being overpriced?

That's not too bad, depending on your model. If I equate your deal's terms to mine - assuming for a moment that you only put $2,500 down, your payments would have been around $1,060 per monnth if I spread the difference. My car listed at 81K, but they knocked it down to 74K, and my payments were also $1,060 per month (I put only $2,500 down). I could be the same deal. However, if 74,666 was the original list, and the knocked that down (the "cost of vehicle" written on the MB lease is less than 74,666) , then your lease isn't quite as good, but still not bad. The best way to look at it perhaps just compare models:

1) They offered me one with a P2 package, trim package (wooden steering wheel, etc.), and IPOD at $2,500 down, $1,006 per mo, 10K mi. If I put what you put down, then it would have been around $821 per mo.
2) They offered me one with P2 package, parktronic, AMG appearance, IPOD at $2,500 down, $1,060 per mo, 10k mi. If i put down what you did, then it woudl have been $875 per mo.

The first car was right off the truck. The seond had a few more miles on it. I would have gone with #1, but the AMG wheels I liked enough to pay $60 per month for (and the Parktronic).

Euromotors in Bethesda MD.

CLS550 2008 27 mo lease is a great alternative to the XF, since the 2009 CLS doesn't at all change drastically, tand there will be even more optiosn in this price range when it comes off lease in just 2 years, which will fly by. Plus XF is new and will surely have some issues, while the CLS is tested and proven.

BTW...Jaguar dealer just called me at home and was sorry to hear I was "backing out of their deal"...but he admited they can't compete wtih MB and BMW on leases, but suggested there should be much better options available in 24 months when things settle down, supply picks up, ownership thing settles down, etc. So I'll reassess the XF then. I love driving the CLS550 though. A little tougher getting in/out of than the XF and really no decent cup holders, but overall the feel and drive of the CLS are better....(plus chicks dig it much more, esp. black, not that this is ever a deciding factor of course).

Several weeks ago I did a walk-around and sit-in of the XF and liked it. It looked and felt modern and seemingly a possible alternative to its competition. Well, last Saturday I took the car on a half hour test drive.

I did highway and local driving, and by the end I wasn't sold. The car was certainly agile, and performed well, but small things kept the car from feeling special. I was surprised by the amount of road and wind noise. In fact the salesman admitted that a lot of noise was entering the cabin, and thought perhaps a seal around the front passenger door was to blame. In a $62,000 car!

The sleek interior design that I loved a week earlier felt overly spartan on the road. The "handshake" that the new shifter performed was entertaining, but not the "emotional" experience that the marketing suggests. And yes, the rotating air vents and rising shifter did feel gimmicky.

Rear leg and head room were very tight and the back seat area seemed somehow unfinished. Add the plastic front grille and problematic design of the headlights and the romance evaporated.

This is a case where I followed the evolution of the creation of the XF and wanted very much to love it. I think the press - particularly the British press - has been overly enthusiastic about the car.

There were 9 available at the dealership three weeks ago, and the same 9 were there this past weekend. I don't know if its the economy, or resistance to the new design, but I was surprised to see a heavily hyped new model available in such numbers for several weeks.

So, it's back to weekend test-drives over the coming weeks, and I'm back to the usual suspects. 5 Series and the M45 are at the top of the list.

Oh well.

I am sorry you didn't like it. I finally did a test drive last weekend and I truly love it and am glad I ordered one. However, I can't understand why they would deliver 4 models and not deliver the ones that were ordered. They put me back another month before I can get mine. Anxiously awaiting it though.

Have driven the car twice and have not yet made a decision. I'm used to an "S" Class car so this is a totally different experience. I do like the car and did not experience any unusual road or wind noise. Thought it handled rought pavement and bumps quite well. I'm not crazy about the paddles and miss being able to use the stick shift manually. I think I might want to wait a little and see how things shake out with the car and in this economy I don't see a shortage of inventory.

Sorry to keep bugging you but leasing is new to me . I now have an offer for a 2008 CLS550 with a list of $73,670 for $5000 drive off and $852 per month--27 months and 10,000 miles per year. What do you think? Will look at the Jag this afternoon but seem drawn to the Mercedes for mnay of the same reasons you cited. Incidentally, I'm in Florida.

If you lease a car and they limit you to 10,000 miles/year, they will charge you so much per mile over that limit. To me, leasing is a rip off.

But if you only do 10,000 miles a year you are fine. Jag/LR gives you mileage options starting at 10,500 miles a year then going to 12,000 miles, 13,500 miles, 15,000 miles, 16,500 miles, 18,000 miles and finally 19,500 miles a year.

If you do a lot of miles a year on an expensive luxury car then leasing at 19,500 or 20,000 miles a year is a good idea as the leasing formulas don't really accurately predict future value at high mileage levels. You end up making out much better then if you bought the car financed it for say four years and then tried to flip out of it in 20 months with 50,000 miles.
