donfenn,

Congratulations on your purchase. Best of luck in the XF.

After a few days in the Premium, are you still happy about passing on the SC?

Comparison with Supercharged by donfenn

I am very happy with the Premium. It still has plenty of spunk.

However, since I was used to this same engine in my Supercharged XJR I must admit that do notice just a bit less "head snap" when I punch my non-supercharged XF. However, I am quite satisfied without the Supercharger, and my concerns about fuel costs in a car that needs premium fuel, makes me feel like less of a fuel pig with the non supercharged version.

I have driven both versions of the XF, and I also experienced the basic V8 in the XJ vs my Supercharged XJR. Please note that this is basically the same engine, with the exception of the added Supercharger... You do not hear or feel the Supercharger unless you are pushing the car or punching the accelerator. At normal everyday city driving at moderate speeds both engines feel about the same. It is when you hit it hard and get the blower working that the Supercharged version feels different. The rear end gearing is a bit more agressive in the Supercharged too, but I did not really notice this much in stop and go driving. In other words, you will notice the diffference in passing, and hard and heavy acceleration situations...Otherwise it pretty much performs basic duty as the same engine. Also note that a 300 hp V8 with 0-60 at just over 6 seconds is pretty quick for the basic XF and far surpasses most of the basic engines of other cars in this class.

I think that I should mention that there are other performance advantages to the Supercharged version of the XF, since the Supercharged version also has revised suspension settings, and selectable driving modes, along with 20 inch wheels. However, I did feel that the 20 rubber felt a bit rougher on lousy pavement, and after dealing with numerous tire failures with 19" wheels on my XJR I was not so excited about the prospect of dealing with 20" wheels on L.A.'s crappy streets.

I can say that I am very happy with my Luxury Premium, but I also discern the bit extra oomph that the Supercharged version can offer.... If there was availability of the Supercharged version at an attractive lease rate, I might have gone that way, but with a waiting list for delivery, and high lease $$ rates, I decided that I could happily live with the non Supercharged version........ and feel a little bit better that I was not guzzling quite as much $4-plus gasoline too.

Of course there is always a chance when buying or leasing the first year of production. However, comparing your experience with the X type is not really the best measure of how the XF might perform. The X type was really just a modified version of the Ford Mondeo. It was a budget level Jaguar based on an inexpensive European Ford. It was a big failure for Jaguar, and one of the reasons that the brand failed under Ford's ownership. I am not sure you can use this X Type experince as comparable situation to the XF.

All of that is true but a lessor known fact is that Jaguar got the quality problems under control even on the X-Type. The Halewood plant that makes the X-Type has won several quality awards including a Gold Plant quality award from JD Powers.

Jaguar on Hood by nyeagle

Stopped by local dealer to take another look at the car. Still love its lines. One of the XF's in the lot had the Jaguar on the hood. At first I liked it but on second thought I think the clean look without is better.

I appreciate your thorough feedback. Best of luck with the XF. I have a feeling I will be coming home with one this week. After driving a half dozen cars in the last few days, the XF is the only one I can't get out of my head.

As far as high end cars go, BMW and MB's have had several really bad launch cars.

Rememeber back to the 7 series when I drive reared it's ugly head, BMW bought back many a cars via the lemon law. MB's high end cars over the last decade are average at best as well.

The XF might not be Lexus like with reliability, but BMW and MB have nothing to really brag about over Jag in terms of reliability.

Yeah the last gen S-Class and early iDrive 7 Series were really, really bad.
I know a wholesaler who specifically looks for those particular 7 Series because BMW extended the warranty on many of them to 8 years 100,000 miles. He can buy one cheap wholesale that has good brakes and tires then keep it for six months with no out of pocket expenses. At the end of six months or so he flips out of it and it only costs him a grand or two in depreciation maybe less if he gets lucky.

Regrettably, I'm dealing with the downside of the 1st year bugs right now. It seems that the supercharged version of the car has a persistent vibration that can be felt at almost all times in the steering wheel. I've been back to the dealership several times and despite their best efforts it's still there. If I accelerate rapidly and then lift slightly off the gas the steering wheel shakes side to side almost a 1/2 inch in either direction. Jaguary engineers say I should be expecting this because it's a performance car. Funny the steering wheel on my vette doesn't shake like this.

What a dissapointment.

The supercharged XF sold itself when I saw if for the first time. Unfortunately, it might sell itself again if Jaguar doesn’t address the steering vibration. For a still undetermined reason my XF shakes.

It is most noticeable (and visible) in the steering wheel, but can also be felt in my seat as well. My dealer has tried everything they know how to do and it still shakes.

Jaguar engineers say it’s a high performance car and vibration is to be expected. I say if they’re betting Jaguar’s future on this car, they might want rethink their position.

Regrettably, despite its promising appearance it’s not a car I’d recommend until they get the first year bugs worked out.
