They're cheap to lease becuase MB and BMW sell/lease many more cars, so they can afford to subsidize them. Jag. cannot, as they sell/lease far, far fewer cars. Has nothing to do with quality. Re: the 80K CLS, I tested both, and both were decent, and don't think the XF doesn't have some cheap feeling things - buttons look/feel cheap, listen to the turn signal sound (similar to what you would hear in a 1970/80s amercian car..maybe a retro thing, but sounds cheap and annoying), the touch button glove box never consistently opens, paddle shifters are not placed well (seem to get in the way at times when using the wheel), and look at the wheel controls (like some dial on a clock radio). It's an okay car, and it's tech features are what's best (USB stick!), but it's simply not worth paying more for tahn a CLS or 550i, that lists for 10-20K more.

Agree with several comments made, in particular the 420hp SC. Seemed quick, but very jerky at times...stomp the pedal at low speeds and there's a noticeable delay (turbo lag I guess). Ride in teh 550i or CLS, and the accelearation response is immediate...esp. the CLS. These cars have lower HP, but are natuarlly aspirated, larger engines, and you can definitely feel the difference in the quickness and smoothness of the acceleration. I will wait for them to upgrade to larger XF engine (1-2 years that will happen, as they will be dumping this old 4.2 liter, one of the smallest V8s still on the road). I'll bet they'll do away with the rotaing vents by then, and restyle the front end some. Ultimately though, the lease payments are what did me in....it's mind blowing how poor the lease deals are relative to comparable BMW/MB cars. The car isn't that great to justify paying premium rates.....the XK convertible perhaps is, but not the XF.

There is no turbo lag in a supercharged engine. The advantage of an engine with a supercharger is more power with less displacement, as well as the ability to reach full boost pressure instantaneously. Turbocharged engines experience a lag in reaching full boost (although this is becoming less and less noticeable in newer engines... see the twin-turbo BMW 3.0 liter in the 3 and the 5),
I can't really speak to perception of acceleration, since that's an intangeable that is going to vary by person to person.

Exactly as mentir said Supercharged engines don't have lag. A centrifugal supercharger might have a tiny bit of lag but in general even they don't and a modified roots based Eaton supercharger like what jag uses has no lag.
I found the throttle in the CLS very jerky in sport mode and typical mercees soft in regular mode.
The XF you drove probably had its adaptive transmission in the softest setting. A good hard 30 minute test drive over over 20 miles would probably reset it to a more aggressive setting. I drive in supercharged range rovers all the time and they don't have any of the jerky throttle that you are complaining about. They use the same engine as the XF SC but make between 20 and 30 less horsepower while hauling around a lot more weight. You would think if any vehicle had throttle lag it would be a nearly 6,000 lbs 390 horsepower supercharger range rover sport.

Peedy1, Why do you post on the Jaguar XF forum so much. Is it the fact that you are unhappy with your MB CLS550, so you have to post messages on the site everyday to discourage other buyers. Please stop! We all know that you want a XF. I just bought a Midnight XF SC with Spice interior and it is drop dead gorgeous. I believe you live in the DC area. If you want me to. I will let you borrow mine one day,so you'll know what you missed out on. Sike. BTW, I buy and never lease. If I want to rent a car which is what a lease really is. I'll go to AVIS and get me a rental car. IMO

The XF probably splits the difference between German and Japanese.
Not as connected as an Audi or BMW, but maybe not as floaty and lazy-boy like as a Lexus.

I agree. Like I said earlier, it feels a lot like my Infiniti M45 sport. This is not a bad thing, but just not quite as good as the BMW. When I was looking at sport sedan in two years ago, I looked at the 530, A6, GS400, etc. The Infiniti was hands down the winner (second was the 530, but it didn't have enough power for me). Hopefully I will be in the position to get a XK-R in a few years to satisfy the British and convertible itch.

I enjoy hearing positive things about the XF. I ordered my since November, 2007 and still haven't gotten it yet. Supposedly in port on the 16th - maybe by Monday I'll finally get it. I am very anxious because I think they are gorgeous too.

U probably missed some posts. I've said I'm waiting for the bigger engine to come out, the kinks to work out, and the refresh. I pointed out a number of things I like, and a number I don't like. I'm not a turbo expert, but the car simply didn't feel as quick as others I've driven in this range (and yes, it was in the “S” mode). My personal car is an M6 Conv., which is certainly much quicker, but it’s not an SC/Turbo, nor have I owned any of those engine types, so I can only speak to how it feels vs. the 550i or CLS. A number of people have posted about the poor lease rates. My M6 (bought) is certainly not for everyday, practical use…hence the everyday car for business use could be an XF, but not this year because I do need to lease for business. Either way, no matter how much money I have, I’m just not such a spendthrift I’d make a poor financial decision (for me anyway) – and the XF rates need to improve relative to other cars to justify it for me. And yes, I'd feel like a fool to buy a new model year car IF they are going to significantly upgrade it in less than two years…especially if you BUY it. But if you’re happy with your purchase, good for you. Not everyone feels as I do.
And no, Englewood, NJ...you want to track me down because you have buyer's remorse, or are you some worried exec. from Tata? If you love your car so much, you should be out driving it. I'm checking in TH to see the good, bad, and ugly w/ the car since, as I've said, I'm interested in where it will be in a year or two and will consider it then. So you can bring your ORANGE interior 2009 XF to me, or I’ll bring the 2010 XF to you, and we’ll see which you like better – if I choose to go that route…you are the “tester” for me.
I think these companies make much more leasing cars than selling them, so TATA will eventually have to bring the rates to reality once the frenzied “early adopters” start to fade and they need to push more cars. Assuming so, and looking forward to an even better engine, it will be a much better car down the road – for leasing, or maybe even buying for those (like you it appears) who want to hold a car and save some cash over the long term. I can’t hold a car a long time unless, like the M6, it’s a high end conv., or a classic…though the 2010 SRT-8 Challenger, 7.0 hemi 600HP is interesting - maybe not refined, but it’ll be blowing the doors off all the XF, CLS, and many others, and a fraction of the cost!

Mr Peedy1, if you have so much money but you want to make a sound financial decision. Why are you crying over a few hundred dollars. People with money dont care about a extra couple hundred dollars. I'm not rich but I'm far from poor. You know I could post a add on here saying that I have a Ferrari or Lamborghini as my personal car but I want the XF for my work car. Congrats, its a very nice car. One of my friends has one. As far as the XF SC that I just bought. Its a really beautiful car. The Midnight with Spice interior is very nice, and no the Interior is not orange. It a red clay color. Its the feature I like most.As far as the the 2010 XF. I didn't want to wait on it. I knew it would be over 80K according to the dealership and articles I've seen on the internet. Not really worth it for an extra 80HP. so your lease payments will probably still be more on the XFR than the XF SC is today.Don't look for a bargain on a XFR either. Its new. So I guess you lose either way because your payments wont be any lower because the price is 20K more. Actually, I got the XF SC for 59K. The salesman allowed me to use my Ford discount. My company is a supplier for Ford, so I used the Ford Parner program which is expires NOV 2008 for Jaguar and Land Rover. That said. You cant use it on the new XFR. I placed my order back in DEC 07, when the XF was not in demand, so the salesman allowed me to use it and I had it in writing that he agreed to it because they are currently not offering the discount on the XF. The XF SC is really in demand now because the price is so low (Fully loaded Premium Luxury version can cost the same)and you get the same engine that the current XK has. Dealership turned down 5 offers for my car when it came in. 63K is a steal for this car and I paid less than that. So when you get your XFR in a couple of years. You will pay 20K plus more than I paid. All you will have to show for it is an extra 80HP. I don't think you need to bring your extra 80HP to me to see. not impressed. lol You feel dumb. I can buy XF now and use the 20K that I saved but you spent and invest it. Now thats a good financial decision that I see you seem to lack. Have a great Life!!!
