Comparison Test: 2007 Mini Cooper S vs. 2008 Volvo C30 - To see if the civilized C30 has a chance against the recently redesigned 2007 Mini Cooper S, we put them together head to head. We did all our usual track testing and back-to-back comparisons, and then plugged all that data into our scoring spreadsheet to determine the winner. (more)

I'd love to see how the A3 stacks up against these two, as long as we're talking "premium hatchbacks".

My folks bought a 2007 Mini Cooper S with the automatic. I spent a bit of time driving it last week. The "sport" button invokes a very obvious difference in shift points in that version.

i agree with maestro- the A3 2.0T should be here, especially with s-line. it may be larger than the mini, but sounds like it's the same size as the volvo. i feel that it poses a better compromise of comfort and fun than either of these hatches, and looks amazing without being retro.

anyway, it sounds less like a tie and more like a nod to the volvo in this article. i'd still much rather have a mini

The Mini Cooper has a distinct personality, that which the Volvo will never be able to touch. But if you ever want to beat Mini in a comparison test, yea well just make your player more practical; that is exactly what Volvo is good at and what Volvo accomplished. I recently looked at the Volvo C30, and my mother own the C70, so I'm familiar with the Volvo family. The C30 is a great looking car, lots of options, and a reasonable motor. But what the Volvo lacks is Mini's unique quirky personality. The Mini is just fun to throw around, and that is what I look for in a hatchback. As for the missing truck space, . . . well if I wanted truck space, I would buy a . . um . . bigger car!!! So, in the end, the Volvo is great and spacious, but the Mini is well . . . just fun!

As for the comment that they would like to see how the A3 would compare . . .
The A3 is a four door hatchback from Audi, this hatch isn't in the same relative category as a Mini or Volvo C30. Both the Mini and the Volvo are 2 door hatchbacks, not four door. The Audi would clearly win in practicality and would be far to compare the three.

Yes, I understand that. But the A3 would still be closely-matched with the C30, because four doors or not, the cars are similar in size, spec and price. The A3, however, has much better performance and a nicer interior. The Volvo counters with more modern style- but the A3 S-Line is quite a looker.

a class is a class and it matters not how many doors are offered. if a car is that good that its performance outwieghs the practicality of four doors, than it could be better for some people.

But that doesn't mean that it doesn't compete in the same 'class' or that its an apples to oranges comparison.

considering both of these(and A3) for downsizing from an SUV for gas milage. Which is the more practical for transporting 2 labs to the occasional vet/Pet's Mart visit and Home Depot runs for bags of mulch, etc?

The Volvo C30 or the Audi A3 are great, very practical every-day cars. The will definitely beat the Mini in a practicality test any day; but, then again you don't buy something like a Mini for practicality, you buy it because it is a nice blend of quirky styling with reasonable functionality. The Volvo C30 and the Audi A3 are great small practical cars, but if you want some excitement in your daily commute, a Mini will do just that.
