Full Test: 2008 Dodge Viper SRT-10 Coupe - The 2008 Dodge Viper SRT-10 isn't all-new, but the signature V10 lump under the hood is. Serious, meaningful changes have increased the V10's output and improved its fuel economy (and even its air emissions, too). And yes, it really is rated at 600 hp, which peaks at 6,100 rpm. Torque is up to 560 pound-feet at 5,000 rpm — as if this descendent of a truck engine didn't have enough torque already. (more)

| They say that using the right tool makes the job much, much easier. But driving a Viper is like proclaiming that the right tool for the job is always a sledge-hammer. Because whether the job be re-attaching the handle on a dainty, wedgewood teacup, or fixing that darned garage door opener, you've decided that the best way to deal with it is to deliver a couple of massive, crushing blows and move on. Every time you drive a Viper you're basically re-enacting Alexander cutting the Gordian knot. If you ever leave a place (starting-line, parking-lot, day-care drop-off area) and don't leave behind a towering cloud of toxic tire-smoke, you're missing the point of a Viper. | |
