First Drive: 2008 Honda Accord Sedan - The '08 Accord strikes a familiar balance of performance, value and efficiency. But this time it's not bland. (more)
First Drive: 2008 Honda Accord Coupe - An oddly sexy Honda Accord with the heart of, well, a Honda Accord. (more)
Full Test: 2008 Honda Accord EX V6 - At the test track, the new Accord hit 60 mph in 7.1 seconds and ran the quarter-mile in 15.5 seconds at 91.8 mph. That's a solid improvement over the Accord in our last V6 Family Sedan Comparison Test, but it's still well behind the Camry V6 that whomped to 60 in just 6.5 seconds and scorched the quarter in 14.6 seconds at 97.3 mph. (more)
Long-Term Test: 2008 Honda Accord EX-L V6 - With every new generation of a vehicle as popular as this, questions are raised, even more so in a segment as fiercely competitive as the family sedan market. Has Honda gone too far in an effort to spice up its volume offering, aspired to too much sophistication? (more)

So let me get this straight - Honda's VCM is supposed to give it a significant advantage in economy over it's similarly powerful, but fixed-displacement competitors, right? I mean, this is Honda showing a leadership role on the technological front, right? So how come it can't even come close to EQUALING (never mind surpassing) the observed fuled economy of the long-term Camry - one of the oldest vehicles in the segment? And a vehicle that is quicker, to boot? Try as they might, Honda can't fight the laws of physics - there is a price to be paid for all that bloated mass, and in the case of fuel economy, it is quantifiable. In terms of its train-wreck aesthetics, less so.

So how come it can't even come close to EQUALING (never mind surpassing) the observed fuled economy of the long-term Camry Did you drive that Camry on the same route you drive the Accord? I'd bet not. So in this case, you're comparing apples to orange juice. |

Replying to: bodble2 (Dec 01, 2008 5:57 pm) With 200 horsepower and 195 foot-pounds of torque on tap, the V6-equipped coupe gets to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds. Its fuel economy is 18/26, and the Accord of that era weighed about 400 lbs less than today's model. Today's fuel economy is 19/29, and has more safety equipment, room, and accelerates to 60 MPH 0.5 sec faster according to Edmunds (although most other magazines show a ~1 sec difference - 7.6sec for the old 200hp Sedan, approx 6.5sec for the new 271hp model). I'd call that substantial improvement.
