What is this discussion about? Honda Accord, Coupe, Sedan

First Drive: 2008 Honda Accord Sedan - The '08 Accord strikes a familiar balance of performance, value and efficiency. But this time it's not bland. (more)

First Drive: 2008 Honda Accord Coupe - An oddly sexy Honda Accord with the heart of, well, a Honda Accord. (more)

Full Test: 2008 Honda Accord EX V6 - At the test track, the new Accord hit 60 mph in 7.1 seconds and ran the quarter-mile in 15.5 seconds at 91.8 mph. That's a solid improvement over the Accord in our last V6 Family Sedan Comparison Test, but it's still well behind the Camry V6 that whomped to 60 in just 6.5 seconds and scorched the quarter in 14.6 seconds at 97.3 mph. (more)

Long-Term Test: 2008 Honda Accord EX-L V6 - With every new generation of a vehicle as popular as this, questions are raised, even more so in a segment as fiercely competitive as the family sedan market. Has Honda gone too far in an effort to spice up its volume offering, aspired to too much sophistication? (more)

"Acceleration to 60 mph from a standstill required 7 seconds (with 1 foot of rollout like on a drag strip) when new, but grew to 7.8 seconds by the Accord's final test. Quarter-mile times slowed from 15.3 seconds at 95.4 mph to 15.8 seconds at 90.3 mph."

This is more like a I4 performance...

Considering the 4-cyl models were tested by Edmunds in the low 9s (similar to the Malibu and Camry), I wouldn't say THAT, but it certainly isn't representative of a car with the most horsepower in the class (271).

So let me get this straight - Honda's VCM is supposed to give it a significant advantage in economy over it's similarly powerful, but fixed-displacement competitors, right? I mean, this is Honda showing a leadership role on the technological front, right? So how come it can't even come close to EQUALING (never mind surpassing) the observed fuled economy of the long-term Camry - one of the oldest vehicles in the segment? And a vehicle that is quicker, to boot? Try as they might, Honda can't fight the laws of physics - there is a price to be paid for all that bloated mass, and in the case of fuel economy, it is quantifiable. In terms of its train-wreck aesthetics, less so.

Where do they say that? Its ratings are very similar to that of vehicles like the Camry.

Did you drive that Camry on the same route you drive the Accord? I'd bet not. So in this case, you're comparing apples to orange juice.

7 seconds to 60 is right on par with most other V6 mid-size sedans so I wouldn't say the Accord is in I4 territory there. However, the fact that it slowed down after 20k miles is what would worry me. Most cars tend to get faster, by a tenth of a second or two, with age but this particular copy did the opposite and in a big way. I'd be very curious to see those same data from some other long term test results.

Those 0-60 times are comparable to those posted by the '98-2002 Accord V6 rated at 200hp under the old standard, so not much progress in 10 years.

About the 1999 Accord EX V6 Coupe, here at Edmunds:

With 200 horsepower and 195 foot-pounds of torque on tap, the V6-equipped coupe gets to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds.

Its fuel economy is 18/26, and the Accord of that era weighed about 400 lbs less than today's model.

Today's fuel economy is 19/29, and has more safety equipment, room, and accelerates to 60 MPH 0.5 sec faster according to Edmunds (although most other magazines show a ~1 sec difference - 7.6sec for the old 200hp Sedan, approx 6.5sec for the new 271hp model).

I'd call that substantial improvement.
