2008 Mega Cab, Diesel HELP!!! by mtn_moose

In Feb I purchased an 08', 2500 mega-cab, 4x4, diesel truck (Cumming 6.7 and 6 speed auto)...and in 6 weeks it has been to the shop 4 times. While driving the vehicle cuts out, then regains power. 1st time I took it in I was told (with only 600 miles on it) that there was a build up of extra soot that was removed. 2nd time the tech was at a loss and did nothing...2 days later the engine light was back on, and the catalytic converter was said to be contaminated and was replaced (only 2100 miles on truck). Two days after that the truck would not even start...now back in the shop again. I spend 50k on a truck that I thought would last a lifetime....can anyone say "LEMON LAW!!!!" Any ideas out there what is up?? Thanks....Moose

Yep. Read back through the "Cummins Diesel questions" on this site, and you'll read of a good number of similar angst complaints. The problem is the cat-back diesel exhaust filtering they put on the new bigger 6.7 cummins. The check engine light "always comes on", and some folks complain that sometimes they won't start or stop running because the particulate filter gets clogged with soot. Several writers mention returns under state lemon laws. Who can blame them. But what I would like to hear about too is are there folks out there who eventually get past the problems. I was lucky. I bought the 06 with the 5.9 on the sage advice from my dealer that the Daimler diesel filtering technology might not be ready for prime time. Based on what I see, it wasn't ready period! Good luck.T29

I have a 2007 Dodge ram 3500 with a 6.7 liter diesl engine. . I have a commercial license and have known for some time that the "way" in which people are driving these trucks is causing alot of the problems ie DPF clogging, bad fuel mileage etc. These cummins diesel motors are designed to be "used". I should say that the more aggressive you are with the throttle, the less chance of clogging the DPF. Thats a fact told to me by many cummins mechanics and my own experience. The fuel mileage is, in part or in whole, caused by the Ultra Low sulphur diesel fue 15ppm compared to Low sulphur diesel fuel at 500ppm. There just is not any lubrication in this particular fuel. I have gained about 3mpg from chipping the motor. My DPF has never clogged,( Knock on wood) and my truck runs great but gets very bad fuel mileage and there is nothing you can do. I am in agreement that Dodge did not think this one out as well as they should. Just like other auto makers they are interested in bottom line only. JC

JC -

Thanks for the heads up....and the info. I was too told that this truck is for hard driving not going around town (I am an outdoor mtn guide, and search and rescue....that is why I got the beast).....but what you say makes a lot of sense.....thanks for the info

Kudos to you for getting the 5.9. I wanted a 5.9 because I know better than to buy a truck that has a "new" first year engine. I was told by 2 dealerships that they couldn't find one. I ended up buying an 07 Ram 2500, (against my better judgement). I too, have had the "check engine light" issue as well as the jerking transmission. Without going into too much detail, I'll just say that this truck was in the shop at least 4 times between May when I bought it and September. It has been in the shop a total of 7 or 8 through December. They did the recall for the check engine light and the "new" flash for the transmission. Truck worked great after that---until about a week ago when the transmission went to jerking again. I called Chrysler today and have started the buy back process. Had some real issues with the service manager where I bought it, which I was happy to tell Chrysler about. They were very helpful and said to give the dealership 72 hrs to contact me about the truck. We'll see..... In the meantime, I am looking for a 06 Dodge with the 5.9L. I don't want to take a chance on these lousy 07's. BTW, one of the loaners they sent me home in was an 07 PT Cruiser(yuck!), and believe it or not, it had the exact same problem as my truck. Check engine light was on and the trans. jerked hard from 2nd to 1st. I would go back to Ford, but you can't beat the pulling power of a Dodge. Not to mention the turning radius in the Dodge is awesome compared to my old Ford. It's a real shame. I really liked this truck. My recommedation would be to stay away from the 6.7L until at least 09.

Good afternoon I purchased a 2007 Mega Cab with the 6.7L cummins and the 6 speed automatic transmission 2 months ago and it had 7000 miles on it. Before I bought this truck I was leasing a 2004 Dodge Quad Cab (4 dr) with the 5.9L cummins and 4 speed automatic transmission. The only problem I have noticed with the 2007 Mega Cab is the jerking of the 6-speed automatic transmission. The only time it will do this is when I select it to stay in 4th gear (select button on shift handle) around town. It will do the jerking thing only when I lift my foot off the throttle pedal. It does not do this every time though. I took the truck on a 2500 mile trip about a month ago and it performed fine. On the freeway I was getting between 16.5 - 17.0 mpg at 75 mph. Around town it is a different story it averages 12.5 mpg. I have a part on order for the interior that the dealer is going to replace so when I take it in I will have them check the transmission. Both trucks pull my camping trailer and atv trailer fine, gotta love those cummins motors. I have read some other emails about the jerking of the transmission but no one has gone into detail on when it happens.

Actually, and according to other replys... its how you drive/use the trucks.... if you are mostly a "in towner, no freeway", then yes... you will have problems... but its says this right in the manual.

Myself, I bought the truck because I DO use it. I regulary pull a 15k lb fifth wheel, with ease and no sweat, and average about 10-11mpg doing so....little less if I am going up steep grades.

Only one time have I had it complain about the DPF, and that was about 800 miles after I got it.... because I had to yet hooked my trailer up to it.... so I just took her on the highway, and opened her up... about 8 minutes later it stopped complaining.

Never once have I had the jerkiness in the 6 speed auto...

These trucks are MEANT to be USED!! The engines want a load on them.

I have nearly 7k miles on it now, and my in town mileage is about 13-14mpg, and highway I average around 17-19mpg. Pulling I get about 10-11mpg.

The only mod I have made is adding a AirAid Intake kit to it, and that increased my intown mileage about 5% (give or take).

Have you had the problem again? Our truck is sitting in the shop now..and they said it will be a month before they get the nationally backordered part. And the Service manager told us this will continue to keep happening...and to fix the truck it costs $10,000 each time...What are we supposed to do when the warranty runs out??
