I was unaware of the sales figures between CY06 and CY07 and your reasons are certainly valid as well. I offered two possible reasons of many and were based on activity over the last 3-4 years rather than just one. I'm also not very knowledgable of what is going on in the car industry in particular. I deal in a different commodity altogether. Good discussion

So, what is the percentage increase of auto-grade steel over the past 3-4 years? Is this increase because the number of suppliers of corrosion-resistant steel have dwindled? I remember seeing that the cost of steel comprises about $400 of a $30,000 car, or probably less than that for an Elantra. So if the price of steel has doubled, that could account for $100-150 of the Elantra's price increases over the past few years.

As I said, I don't know what goes on in the car industry. I have no idea what car manufacturers pay for their steel, who they buy it from or what type of steel is used. All I know is, the machine shops I purchase steel parts from have doubled or tripled their prices over the last 3-4 years, depending on the type of steel used. Their shop rates and setup times haven't changed over that time. I do know the main culprit for the steel price hikes during this time period (especially during 2004) has been China. Their expanding economy has caused them to import incredible amounts of steel, depleting the world supply. Recently, for us, steel prices have moderated as we are finding steel inventory at mills and distrbutors has been going up a little.

What's up with this.. Now they bumped the milage rating down.. it used to be ..28/36 now is 25/33.. wich is more acurate.. That's the kind of milage I get..
I know it's only 3 miles... but this can be deseving.

All 2008 and later MY cars must be rated using the EPA's new MPG standards. All 2008's have a lower rating than their 2007 counterparts.

If it makes you feel any better, the EPA rating (under the old, looser rules) for my '04 Elantra is 24/32, and it's basically the same engine but with some tweaks (also tweaks to the automatic transmission). So the 2007+ Elantras do considerably better in FE than they used to.

I saw a few 2008 GLSes when I checked my local Hyundai dealer's lot today. They looked the same as the 2007s, except for one thing: the window sticker. Prices are up for 2008, so that a GLS AT with the Preferred Package and mats now tops $17k. When I think that a little over 3 years ago, a fully-loaded Elantra GT AT with leather and moonroof was only $17.4k MSRP, that is a big price jump in a short time. Maybe that is why sales of the 2007 Elantra haven't been higher?

BTW, if anyone is interested in a 2007 Limited 5-speed, this dealer (Metro Hyundai, Bloomington, MN) has one, in silver. I bet that's a pretty rare car now. It's also the first 5-speed Elantra I've ever seen.

What don't you like about the seats in the 2008 Elantra vs. the 2007 model? I've test driven the 2007 and like it but just heard about the new safety features available in 2008 models so am considering that also now, even though they have no rebates.

I was comparing the driver's seat of the 2001-2006 Elantra, which had an 8-way seat with dual height adjusters and lumbar support, to that on the 2007-8 Elantra, which has a single height adjuster and no lumbar adjustment. I like the seat on the old Elantra better. But the new Elantra SE has a telescopic wheel, which makes up somewhat for fewer seat adjustments. And the 2008 SE has ESC standard, which is really great.

Hi,

I m from Toronto ON Canada.

I m relatively new to this forum. Right now i m looking to buy new car and after reading all forums and based on my requirement I narrow down to Elantra / Mextix or Vibe

All 3 have some advantages over other. Elantra wins over price and features as well as interior.

I need advise on choosing model and year. I m looking to have Auto + Power everything + 4 disk break + ABS

I have also seen used car listing for 2007 model, If i get everything in one year old car can i consider buying it? here it makes almost $4K-5K difference.

Thanks
