I have to agree with you on this, of course I may be biased since I have the identical interior in my Z as in the photos. I sat in and drove several Fusions and Milans before my purchase, and had no problem identifying the 'entry luxury' vehicle. I've been in and out of the car business since 1961, and owned probably close to a hundred cars since then. I've never been more satisfied with a vehicle purchase, having had none be more trouble free as this one (I just turned 11,000 miles). Mine is totally loaded including AWD, which really clenched the deal for me. I may only really need AWD a few days a year, but when I need it, I truly NEED it.

The only thing I had hoped for in this car and didn't get, was a little better mpg in the city cycle. Highway mpg is great, but I do good to average 20 mpg around my area, and I have gotten that good or better with a number of larger and/or more powerful vehicles.

And I can't overstate the peace of mind I have knowing that wherever I am, if I should need emergency repairs, they are as near as the closest FoMoCo dealer, regardless of what they sell. This can't be said of any of this car's nearest competitors......example....you can't take your Caddy to a Chevy dealer for warranty work.

For me, I see no structural differences. Placement of functional items does not vary much. Each eye is different of course, but the mount points all look the same in both photos. The difference you point out is certainly there, but the biggest difference appears to be a fairly superficial "blocky-shaped" bulking up added to the molding of plastic on the top line of the dash.

The steering wheels, center stacks and center stack control, plus the shape and styling of the consoles are distinctive between the Camry and Lexus. To me, the Camry interior looks at least as much like the Acura TL interior as it does the Lexus interior. The Camry and Accord interiors also seem reminiscent of one another. These are all similarly-sized sedans contemporary of one another using current styling cliches. The Lexus strikes me as the most tasteful of the lot.

The Lincoln with a bit more effort or finesse could definitely have looked the best and most distinctive to most eyes. The failure in competely achieving that aim has to do with drawing the upper dash line uniformly too high, with little variation in height at the top of the center stack. It looks to me (averyone of course has their own tastes) that if the same shapes had been used--but with more variation separating driver and passenger dash shapes (as Lincoln used to do, even as recently as in the Aviator)--then the interior would look less narrow, upright and confining.

Still, I applaud Ford for separating these twins as much as they did in this case. Lincolns should not look like a Ford with more trim (as the "difference" between Fusion and Milan interiors), and clearly this Lincoln interior is different from the Ford's.

More differentiated anyway than for example the old Granada/Versailles effort. You'd think they would have learned this lesson for good a generation ago. After the Versailles, came the beautiful rear drive Continental. Totally based on a Fairmont, but not a window, fender, or interior panel the same. That Continental still looks sharp today.

The MKZ exterior has some interesting trim here and there, but the overall shape does not distinguish it much from several other mid-size sedans. Give it some MKR cues next time around, maybe interesting butt and shoulders. Lines that soon enough will lead to even the non-car oriented recognizing it as a Lincoln.

Funny you should mention the MKR. I just recently saw these renderings that sound like they are pretty accurate: It looks quite good.

Lexus has more, I even dare to say much more, luxurious feel when seating inside. It is not like design and materials are better, but solid feel of controls, how lids open-close and many other details. Luxury is about details and this is area where Ford does not pay attention while Toyota and any German luxruy does.

Acura has the same feeling as Honda inside - it is actually difficult to distinguish them while sitting inside. MKZ has different design than Fusion but feeling is the same – controls have the same cheap feel and gear selector looks like it came from cheap car (and it did). Angular shape does not help either. I sometime wonder how Ford interior designers come up with ideas.

I appreciate the review by Edmunds, I really do. However, I am not hardly surprised by their conclusion. In my blunt opinion there is no way on Gods earth that Edmunds. Can let a Lincoln be mentioned in the same sentence with an Acura or a Lexus. The review was pretty close to what I've come to expect from Edmunds. It was a 2 minute and 42 seconds trashing of the Lincoln MKZ.

For example, The 2007 Lincoln MKZ won Wards Automotive interior of the year. Edmunds finds the Interior "cost cutting." The Lincoln MKZ is the best built car in the class according to the 2007 J.D. power and associates initial quality survey (Yes I know it's only the first 90 days). The MKZ hasn't been out long enough for it to rank on the dependability survey. Edmunds doesn't even mention the build quality at all. To that, Edmunds feels that the MKZ can only compete on price. Which to me, that statement is the ultimate slap in the face. Edmunds ignored the Quality, Style, and Value the MKZ has to offer. Considering that it's sticker price is thousands less that it's rivals. Also, Edmunds feels that it's "Cheap Luxury" subsequently flushing the MKZ down the toilet. Wow !!!!!!!!! what a complement.

It's not that I'm mad at Edmunds for being bias I can't blame them at all. Toyota made BBBBBBBillions of dollars last year and Edmunds wants a piece of it. Ford is about a year or two from pulling out of this mess they are in. And Edmunds can't make any money. Oh I'm just gitty with anticipation for Edmunds review of the 2008 Ford Focus. How much do you all want to bet it's going to be the ultimate POS !!!!!!!!!! I start the pot at $10.00

In my honest opinion, and to be very arrogant. I feel that Edmunds has such a low opinion of domestic cars. The only way that a domestic luxury car especially a Lincoln !!! can run with an Acura and Lexus. Is to be just like Hyundai !!!! Edmunds wants domestic car companies to shamelessly photo copy the Acura and Lexus on the inside and out. Then place the car companies badge on the front. Wow, what a "Bold Move" !!!!!!!!!! Oh well, life goes on. Are there any preseason football games on this weekend.

Steve McGarrett's Car by mistersparkle

I hate to ruin Doug Lloyd's childhood memories, but Steve McGarrett always drove a Mercury, not a Lincoln, on Hawaii Five-0. He drove a 1968 Mercury Parklane Brougham from 1968 to 1974 and a 1974 Mercury Marquis from 1974 to 1980. You can read about the cars at this link. I always thought it was odd that he didn't get a new car every year like all the other TV detectives of the day. The other thing I remember about the show is the way McGarrett drove. He never just pulled up to a crime scene, he screeched up to it, sliding the last five feet or so. I believe that the way that Detective Frank Dreben always screeches into a bunch of trash cans on the Police Squad series is an homage to Steve McGarrett's driving style.

On the other hand, Frank Cannon was indeed a big man in an even bigger Lincoln. Those old Lincolns were, by modern standards, just awful. But, they did have a certain personality that is lacking in today's models. If you look at the instrument panel in the old Mark III and IV models, you can see that the Zephyr was trying to do a little bit of that design in the gauges, although that's been taken out of the MKZ.

interior noise level by brucelinc

In comparing the interior sound levels with the Lexus ES350, the MKZ is quieter at wide open throttle and at 70 MPH cruise based on Edmunds tests. That is pretty significant in a car aimed at entry level luxury and was not mentioned in the test. Also, to criticize the car as not being very sporting is like criticizing a stack of blueberry pancakes for not being very salty. The MKZ is not intended to be a sports sedan.

Having said that, I agree that the MKZ falls a bit short in the details. The D-L shifter, the lack of rear AC vents, the prop-rod hood and the manual tilt/telescope wheel all say "cost-cutter" to me.

If you factor in what the MKZ is good at, and the price, I fully understand why owners seem to like the car. It appears to be dead reliable and of high quality. With some tweaking here and there, however, it could be even more competitive.

Not all of us are sheep. Many consumers do not want electro luminescent gauges, spartan German "drivers" cockpits or generic melting wax Japanese designs. This interior has detailing and a sense of art deco mid century opulence, which is what an American interior should have. And every review of the THX stereo contradicts this one. Also, as far as its competitors go, the FWD Lincoln is just as fast as them, its, has great MPG, the biggest, has the most cargo and interior space, looks 1000x better, especially in a dark color, and even with the new (stupid) firm suspension still provides a Lincoln ride.

I remember Edmunds placed Ford Fusion last in the comparo test after Camry, Accord and Sonata. Yes Sonata beats Fusion in eyes of Edmunds. I did not make comparo test but I sat in Sonata is has cheapest interior among four and Camry has lower quality interior also, that is what I know for sure. Of course Edmund can insist that it is made from gold but I believe my eyes more. I personally prefer Car and Driver’s point of view to anyone’s else.

BTW I did not read MKZ review by Edmunds, I do not care what Edmunds think about MKZ, I can imagine Edmunds will probably take anti-American attitude anyway – it is kind of attitude widespread in California and forced by local governments too. I have my own opinion and it is that Ford interior designers and engineers have to try harder to come up with better designs. Ford has to stop playing cheap card and aiming at Huindays of the world, they have to take their aim higher – beat Toyota an Honda in their own game – with better design, style and engineering, not just offering similar car for less.

"I personally prefer Car and Driver’s point of view to anyone’s else"

Wow, Edmunds that is serious. I come on the internet and say the most inflamitory things I could say. To be honest I thought I was going to get blasted by all the Import fans because of what I've said. And I figured that you would remove my link all together because of what I said. Instead all that's happened is almost everybody echoes my sentiment. Savetheland, doesn't even care what you think !!!!!!!!!! Ouch !!!!!! that's strong. You have a serious image problem. Does anybody from Edmunds want make a statement about this !?!?!?!?!?!?

savetheland my friend. I completely understand what your saying. But here's the problem behind your statement

That is assuming that Lincoln isn't trying or has not improved their interiors. Come to find out the MKZ won Wards Automotive best interior 2 years in a row. In 2006 with the Zephyr and 2007 with MKZ. We all know that the Zephyr and MKZ are identical on the inside and essentially the same car. And enlight of this, Edmunds just flushed the MKZ down the toilet. It's almost as if Edmunds is telling Wards to "do something to themselves."

It's not the review of the MKZ that upsets me so much. I have no problem with respecting other peoples opinion. When it is based on fact NOT bias or a prejudice. It's the fact the MKZ is a very good car with a resume of nothing but praise from a list of 3rd parties that have nothing or very little to do with Ford. Then, to have Edmunds.com a source that people view as a very reputable and worthy source. Flush the MKZ down the toilet. That's F#$# UP !!!! The MKZ deserves a lot better than this. It's ashame and really sad that so many people in our country have become so low.

"Cheap Luxury" F#$ You Edmunds !!!!!!!!!!!!!
