I saw someone the other day write about a potential guarantee while he was learning the product at a new store (mack or moo?). Do most of you guys get a draw and have to cover it 1x or more than that to start drawing commission? In my industry, we have a draw and must cover it 2x and then we split every dollar after that with the company on a 50/50 basis.

Salespeople here get a $250 a week draw against there commission, and there insurance comes out of that. If they don't cover it then the company does not hold it against them, meaning they don't owe it the next month.

It really depends on what kind of professional experience you have.
If you were in sales in a related field,if you owned your own business, etc.
If you are a real greenpea in sales in general, you have almost no shot at getting hired by a BMW,Benz,Porsche dealer.
Those dealers want pro's.
Lexus,Infiniti,Volvo,Acura it depends on the dealer.
Some dealers can't take the time to train a salesperson, some dealers WANT greenpea's so they can control them.

Thanks. I've got 5 or so years of professional sales experience, plus sales-"lite" experience in retail and restaurant settings. I've also completed the Dale Carnegie Sales Advantage class.
I've heard of companies that specialize in setting up working vacations for professionals that are looking to change careers. Wish I could do something like that with car sales!

Cole, I guess you could do the working vacation thing, just not officially Take time off from work and go to work in a dealership. You will know in 2-3 weeks if it is for you. if it is not then you just quit. I promise you that you will not be the first person to quit at a car dealership after two weeks.
The time of year you do it though will make a big difference. You can't judge sales in the summer as to what you experience in the winter, just like sales traffic in the summer can't be expected in the winter. If that makes any sense at all.

Yup and reverse that if you are selling Jeeps, Land Rovers and in some areas Subarus.

It means talking with customers and offering your services next time they're in the market. First ask if they have a salesperson. You don't want to step on the other guy's toes. I do this everyday as soon as I get to the dealership, whether I'm working the early or late shift. Saturdays I hit it early right before the sales meeting and after. Sometimes I get lucky so I get a customer and skip the sales meeting

Try to go with the brand you like, you will have more credibility while selling.
I was wondering if in your first auto sales job you went with whomever was hiring, or your favorite brand of car. I would tend to go with my favorite brand, if possible. I like Mazda.
