Saturn Aura vs. Toyota Camry

You are in the Saturn Aura Forum. Your Hosts are pat & karens
| The only reason why there are more satisfied owners of the Aura is because there are less owners of the Aura. Of course when you have the best selling car there are gonna be some lemons but they're very rare. A lot of people who are happy with their Camry's dont even bother to post their reviews on it. However with the ones who aren't happy usually publicize their distaste. The Camry has a higher quality interior than the Aura. I also find it annoying there is no fold down armrest in the rearseat of the Aura while the Camry XLE has a reclining seat. I also find it a joke the Aura with a standard four speed automatic transmission got car of the year. The six speed over at CanadianDriver.com criticizes a clunky gear shifter in the Aura. The Aura also isn't good for tall people there are many complaints of hitting heads on the roof rail while trying to get in and out. As far as refinement in the engines the Camry is a far better choice. And if your looking into resale value the it's obvious the Camry has a high reputation than the new Aura take a look back in Saturn's older cars... Also with my experience with Toyota's all of them lasted forever with me. | |
I was curious to see what the aura was like so I went down to the Cedar Rapids Iowa dealer last night (the 27). They didn't have the camry and accord there anymore for the side by side by side comparison so I asked the salesman if he would be opposed to me going to the local toyota dealer and driving them back to back. He said it was fine. After test driving the aura, basically over to the toyota dealer, I told the toyota salesman that I was driving the aura and would also like to drive the camry as means of comparison. She smuggishly says "Your test driving a saturn". She seamed annoyed and said she would be back with another salesman because she was waiting on confirmation of another sale. Anyway we (the saturn salesman and toyota salesman) left for the test drive and the car drove fine for the most part until coming up to a right hand turn at a yellow light. The toyota rep was in the front seat and he says "you'll make it" so I hit the accelerator to beat on coming traffic and the car hesitates, significantly! So I said, what the hell was that. The salesman acted like he was completely oblivious what I was talking about. So I said the pause, the hesitation, and the car that is right on my ass. He tells me the car was designed for smooth acceleration, and the transmission is learning your driving habits, that is if you're driving aggressively the car will be programmed to accelerate aggressively and if accelerating slowly it is programmed to accelerate slowly. Granted it sounds like an admirable trait but experiencing this learning process is a little unnerving, but the experience was far better than what my sister had to deal with, that is, at least we made it back to dealer. Other than the one hesitation the car accelerated as good as the aura, although the aura had better chassis dynamics. The interior of the camry at first glance is better than the aura, but a closer look reveals many uneven panel gaps and even elevation changes that ruin what could be decent interior. I did not notice any irregularities in the aura. As for price the aura has 1000 dollars customer cash right now but the camry has a 199/month lease. All things considered I really can't believe the camry is the best selling car in america. People are simply oblivious to the fact that there are better cars. I'm just glad my unbiased opinion allows me to compare and find what I like and not what the masses think I should like.
